Rutland Daily Herald BllSiflGSS Monday, April 27, 1998 8 Mere Additions With Investment At Great Escape The significant ride at any theme park is rollercoasters. People need the escape. That's what they get with coaster rides." John Collins, General Manager Latest Windows Will Set Standard Hie New York Times Federal and state officials are now racing to determine what antitrust action, if any, they should take against Microsoft Corp. before its next-generation operating system, Windows 98, is shipped to personal computer makers in May and goes on sale in June. But the personal computer industry has been gearing up for Windows 98 far longer than the antitrust authorities.

And the early impact ofWindows 98 on the marketplace, computer executives and analysts predict, will be only a ripple compared with the tidal wave of its predecessor Windows 95 with sales projected at less than half the volume ofWindows 95. Still, even with a sluggish start, Windows 98 seems destined to become the next operating-system standard. Industry executives and analysts note that it represents a technological improvement over Windows 95 and that every personal computer maker plans to load Windows 98 onto their new machines. A new operating system from Microsoft, whose software runs 95 percent ofnew PCs sold, is a renewed opportunity for the company to powerfully influence the direction of computing. The Justice Departments antitrust division and state attorneys general are examining whether Microsofts plans for Windows 98 will give it an advantage in the new markets of Internet software and online commerce.

In addition, according to industry executives, Microsoft is offering price discounts on Windows 98 to PC makers who install certain equipment a practice that some antitrust experts say shows how the company uses its nearmonopoly in the operating-systems business to try to gain an advantage in new markets. Microsoft, for example, is said to be offering discounts on Windows 98 to PC makers who agree to install television-receiver circuitry into their computers, an apparent move by Microsoft to stimulate demand for its WebTV online service. By PAUL POST Correapondent LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. Premier Parks is inyesting another $3 million at Great Escape this year, which includes the addition of an Alpine Bobsled roller coaster ride and a new picnic area. The improvements mean Premier Parks has invested a total of $10 million since taking over the more than 40-year-old Lake George-area theme park from Charles Wood two years ago.

Last year, $7 million was spent on three major additions: the Boomerang roller coaster, wave pool and Paul Bunyans Bucket Brigade. The latter attraction is a giant treehouse that sprays water in all directions, topped off by a huge bucket that drops hundreds of gallons of water on people below every few minutes. The new Alpine Bobsled roller coaster ride will be located between the Raging River and wave pool, where visitors are used to seeing domed picnic buildings. A new picnic area will be built on the north side of the Comet roller coaster and wave pool complete with five new pavilions, a full-service catering kitchen area and restrooms. In addition, the swinging Pirate Ship ride will be moved to the south end of the Alpine Bobsled.

Vice President and General Manager John Collins described the Alpine Bobsled as a family thrill ride, but not quite so intimidating as the Boomerang. It will be 65 feet high and 1,800 feet long with six, eight-passenger cars that come down a banking trough that looks like a giant water slide. But there is no water and cars are free-wheeling, not on a track. Collins said the ride is manufactured by Intamin of Switzerland, and that the next closest one is located at an Ohio theme park. This brings to three the total number of roller coasters at Great Escape, keeping up with a nationwide trend that has seen rides such as this boom in popularity throughout the 1990s.

The significant ride at any theme park is roller coasters," Collins said. People need the escape. Thats what they get with coaster rides. Forty new coasters are being built at parks throughout the world this year. Premier Parks also recently acquired Walibie, a chain of six European parks with three in France, two in Belgium and one in The Netherlands.

He said the move was in keeping with Premiers strategy of buying good, regional products. It has 14 U.S. parks including Riverside in Agawam, and Darien Lake between Buffalo and Rochester, which are the two closest to Great Escape. Great Escape had a record year in 1997 with a 20 percent increase in attendance, from 570,000 in 1996 to 700,000 last year. Collins attributed this to the new rides, increased advertising, cooperative weather and extended hours.

There was no rain on weekends. That really helped a lot, he said. We just had a really good response. The park also stayed open until 8 p.m. on weekdays and 10 p.m.

on Saturdays. Previously, it had always closed at 6 p.m. Another key feature in last years success was the introduction of season passes that allowed people to make an unlimited number of visits for a one-time fee. This was particularly popular with area residents who Herald File Photo A new roller coaster will be installed at the Great Escape in Lake George, N.Y., this year. It will be the third roller coaster at the adventure getaway.
