George Allen and Democratic Lt. Gov. Donald S. Beyer Jr. As a result, Beyer, whose wife has roots in Scranton, didnt get invited to a luncheon sponsored by Allen to honor former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Democrats control the House and the Senate in Richmond and they killed virtually the whole of Allens program that included huge cuts in income and business taxes.

Beyer, who could be the next Democratic candidate for governor, originally approved, of tax cuts but later opposed them. Thatcher was in Virginia to celebrate the 302nd anniversary of the founding of William and Mary, the nations second oldest university. While Allens luncheon for Thatcher was under way, Beyer had an egg salad, sandwich from the Capitol snack shop. He shrugged off what an Allen staffer later said was an oversight in not inviting him. He said: Its his house and he should have the right to invite whomever he wants.

Beyer is a millionaire car dealer from Falls Church. His wife, Megin, is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Frank A. Carroll, ex-Scrantonians who have been in Alexandria 40 years.

Mrs. Carroll is the former Suzanne Clarke, whose late father was. F.D. Clarke, who operated a plumbing and heating business here. Dr.

Carroll is the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Frank A. Carroll of North Scranton. MAHON IN ROLE Former Scrantonian John Mahon, an actor in Hollywood, is playing the role of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a movie called The American President now being filmed in California.

Mahon, almost totally paralyzed by infantile paralysis at 12, recovered with damage only to his left arm. He acts as often as he gets parts. Recently, he had back-to-back parts in televisions General Hospital. In addition, he teaches acting and works with Media Access Office an organization that lobbies executives from motion pictures, television, radio and advertising to hire persons with disabilities. While his part as an Army general is a minor one in the overall story, Mahon is excited about it.

He called a relative, retired Army Col. George L. Shevlin of Scranton, who won a Silver Star medal in Vietnam, for tips on how the chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff should be portrayed. Michael Douglas plays the president and Annette Benning, wife of Warren Beatty, plays the First Lady.
