4 r'T'T'T ttt rrv? ry yrrr yyyryi' pyr t' -IPdiuiiniders Absemift for Sept. 4. 1965 THE DAILY SUN A-17 By JACK WILLIAMS Sun-Telegram Sport Writer The 33 candidates for Eisenhower. High's varsity football team should be in good condition by the time twice-a-day drills begin Tuesday. They're required to run the agonizing "Smaha Mile." Eagle mentor Milt Smaha has established a 7-minute time limit for each player.

After a series of strenuous calesthenics, the gridders make like trackmen and try to shatter the mile barrier. If they don't succeed, it's try, try again. "I've been pleasantly surprised by the amount of kids who've survived this method of conditioning," says Smaha. "We had one boy who ran a very respectable 5:53." After an hour of all-out exercises that's really moving. The extra running is all a part of Smaha's new reliance on quickness and mobility, two qualities needed to replace the bruising size of last year's crew.

"We don't have a single varsity candidate as heavy as 200 pounds," moaned the Eagle mentor. Nine returning lettermcn, headed by 190-pound fullback Bill Bernier, form the nucleus of the '65 Eagles. Three are backs, and only one (Steve Preston) is a junior. "We should be about two-thirds seniors this year," says Smaha, "but many of uhem will be players up from the jayvees and Bees with little varsity experience." Besides the hard charging Bernier, Smaha's monogram winners are right halfback Preston (185), left halfback Bobby Gire (175), ends Mickey Uk-leja (150) and Bill Schroeder (170); tackles Paul Wesley (185) and Marty Slack (180); guard John Schiller (180), and center Brian Dewar (175). Two others with varsity experience are transfer Dan Broussard (170), a guard, and Mike Nieto-Gomez (170), an end turned guard.

Several potential candidates for varsity jobs have yet to report for some reason or another, while several more have experience on Eisenhower's championship jayvee and runner-up Bee teams. Big, powerful backs will characterize the Eagle attack. Besides the blasting Bernier, Sma ha will play 194-pound Arnie McCoy and 195-pound Dick Black at running back positions. The quarterback slot, vacated by All-Ivy Leaguer Bob McKin-ney, is up for grabs among four people: Bill McKinney (180), Ron Hartt (135), Chris Hart (130), and Melvin Henry (172). Assisting Smaha with the varsity hopefuls are Norm Daluiso (line), and Don Seinturier (defensive backs).

Junior varsity coaches are Gresnam Rosecamp and Jerry Kramer and Bee mentors are Ed Lindsay and Paul Mucken-fuss.
