Roess, 81, of 809 West First Street, well known businessman operated a grocery store on Main Street for 50 years, died in 'his home at 12:20 a.

m. today. Born in Oil City Sept. 9, 1873, son of the late Mr. and Christian he conducted his Main Street business until his retirement in 1945.

The deceased was a member of Good Hope Lutheran Church where served as as vaseryman and was a member of a Men's Brotherhood. He also was first of the Oil City Industrial Loan vice member of the board of directors of the Citizens Savings Loan Association, and a member of the Old Guards Club. On May 17, 1899, he was married to the former Sarah J. Kohler, who died in October 1937. Surviving are the following six children: Mary Roess, of bus, Mrs.

Lloyd Bromley and Mrs. Eugene Bankson, of Oil City; John William Roess Oil City; and Carl Roess, of Middleton, 0. surviving are two brothers, Albert, Oil City, L. C. Roess, of Sierra Madre, one sister, Mrs.

Clara Reimann, of Buffalo, N. and five grandchildren. The body was taken to the Steffee Funeral Home where friends may call and attend funeral services at 2 p. m. Friday.

Dr. Edward Kuhlmann, pastor of Good Hope Lutheran Church, will and burial will be made in Grove Hill cemetery. $3,000 More Given For New Parish House During the past week total of $3,000 was received for the new the present total to $72,736, the parish house, fund, which brings Grace Methodist Church monthly news bulletin revealed The parish financial drive is almost over, the report added, since the cash and pledges at the year's end for the campaign totaled $140,607. Church discipline requires 50 cent in cash and tangible asper sets before construction of any new unit, so a goal of $85,000 was set which the architect stated is a reasonable one. If payments conto come in at the rate of $3,000 per month, the church will be in a financial position to start construction about May 1. R.

The group soon will meet with the architect. Youths Are Freed of Mail Box Tampering One of the two Franklin youths, who were held by Oil City police Tuesday following report they were tampering with mail boxes in the Clark Summit area, was released at 4:30 p. m. yesterday, police said today. This was done following a phone call from Postal Inspector Schwartz, of Punxsutawney, at 4:30 p.

m. who stated the postal authorities would not prosecute the youths. Schwartz told police he had contacted the attorney not general's office which said it was interested. Schwartz, however, asked the local department to obtain statements and added he would pick these up from the boys and do any witnesses, in a few days. As far as the postal were concerned, both youths could be released, Schwartz said.

Pringle, 511 Moran Street, faculty member of the Oil City High School, recently was hospitalized injuries he received from a fall on the ice, the Lions Club weekly bulletin reported today. The bulletin also reported the receipt of a letter from Miss Alma Troxell, superintendent of the Oil City Hospital, thanking the club for the Christmas gifts for the childrens ward. It also reported that Mrs.

Ella Davison, 303 West Sixth Street, who served the club as a waitress for a number of years is sick and would like to hear from the club members. V. McQuown of 24 Pearl 2-C Stellman, will become. the bride of Airman Sophia Stellman, of Emlenton, Saturday morning in Church. Rev. Thomas Eustace, of East Brady, uncle of the bride elect, will the exchange of vows at 10 o'clock and will be celebrant of the nuptial mass.

Wedding music will be presented by Mrs. Leo Callahan, organist, and John Terrance McQuown, of Erie, sister in law of the bride elect, vocalist. Maid of honor for her sister will be Miss Sally McQuown. while little Mary Elizabeth McQuown, niece of the bride elect, will be flower girl. Charles V.

McQuown brother of the bride elect, will serve Mr. Stellman as best man and ushering the guests their seats will be James McCord." of Rockiand. and John Terrance McQuown, of Erie, also a brother of Miss McQuown, who will be given in marriage by her father. Jimmy McCormick, of Rockland. a nephew of the prospective bridegroom will be the ringbearer.

Following the ceremony a wedding breakfast will withe served in the Bridge Lunch a reception to be held there from 2:30 to 5 p. m. in the afternoon. Miss McQuown is a graduate of St. Joseph's High School and is employed as telephone operator for the Bell Telephone Co.

Her fiance received his diploma from Rockland High School and is serving with the U.S. Air Force. Merry Bunco Club Elects Officers Mrs. Pearl Kellner was named president of the Merry Bunco Club their meeting Monday evening in the home of Mrs. Amy Turner, Bissell Avenue.

Also named were: Miss Viola Lewis, vice president; Mrs. Harold Biltz, treasurer; Mrs. John Firster, secretary; and Mrs. Rose Huff, assistant secretary. Prizes for the games in play during the evening went to Miss Alta Lewis, Mrs.

Henry Firster, and Mrs. Biltz. Mrs. John Firster received the travel prize and Mrs. Charles Moon, the guest prize.

Mrs. Richard Winger will be hostess for the Jan. 18 meeting. Refreshments were served by the hostess. Johnstone Class Holds Election Officers elected at the meeting of the Johnstone Class of the First Presbyterian Church Monday night include: Mrs.

president, Eugene McChesney conducted a Bible quiz. Feb. 1 is the date set for the next meeting in the church. Myron Bromley Will Be Speaker at Prayer Week Service Tonight Myron Bromley, an instructor at the St. Paul's Bible Institute, St.

Paul, who will preach in the North Side prayer week service in the Salvation Army Citadel, Spring Street, at 7:30 p. m. today, wili leave for the Netherlands, New Guinea, on Jan. 27, where will be engaged in translation work. He will work in the Baliem Valarea, the same area where a ley United States Air Force plane crashed during World War II.

Until the time of the crash no white man had ever been in that area. The men who were crash victims learned only one word ed of the lang. of the natives, therefore uage Bromley must go in and learn the by phonetic means so it language will become possible for the missionaries to teach these natives in their own tongue. William Ettenger, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, will be the speaker at the South Side service today which will be held in the Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church, East First Street near Wilson Avenue. This special day of prayer is part of a worldwide observance and is under the sponsorship of the Oil City Ministerial Association. -Year-Old Hurt While Sled Riding Craig Culver, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack W.

Culver, of 4 Innis Street, Oil City, was injured while sled riding near his home shortly after today. He is suffering from concussion and was admitted to the Oil City Hospital at 1:30 p. m. today. He suffered a fractured skull in an accident last summer.

His condition is described as fair. Details of the accident could not be learned early this afternoon. The sled destroyed in the accident but it was not known whether Craig struck a car, as or whether the vehicle hit him he went down the street. Officers Installed By Kiwanis Club Dr. Thomas L.

A candidate from the Pleasant-1 ville lodge is expected to attend next Tuesday night's meeting when the first degree will be conferred.

Miss Hasson Suffers Stroke in Georgia Miss Sarah Hasson, well known city resident who resides with her sister, Mrs. W. O. Walker, West Second Street, suffered astroke while visiting at the home of her niece and family in Georgia, according to information received by friends here. It is reported she is getting along fairly well and her attending physician is pleased with her progress.

The local woman and her sister left Oil City shortly after Christmas to visit the latter's daughter and family who reside in Georgia. Begin Razing Old Goldberg Property Demolition of the former Goldberg property, located at the intersection of Third and Reed Streets, which was purchased by St. Stephen's Church last month, is underway. The large windows were removed from the building yesterday and carted away in an Oil City Milling truck. Standing by was one of the Louis Kraft vehicles ready to start work.

The present bundling will be removed and cleared for a site where a new 12-room building will be I constructed to be used for a school. Dr. Welty Named to State Committee Dr. James A. Welty, of Oil City, has been named as a member of the committee on rural medical service of the Medical Society of the State Pennsylvania.

Dr. Welty's appointment to the committee was announced today by Dr. James L. Whitehill. of Rochester, president of the State Medical Society.

Adequate medical care for Pennsylvania's rural areas is the primary objective of the state level committee which cooperates with voluntary and governmental health agencies and citizens groups. Postal Receipts For Year Show Increase Postal receipts in the local post office last year totalled $286,400.87, an increase of than $11,400 over the 1952 receipts, Postmaster Grant W. McElhatten has announced. This amount exceeds all other years with the exception of 1931 when extraordinary advertising campaigns by several large local concerns set an all time record. During that year receipts were $356,253.48.

Since the year after the appointment of the present postmaster, in 1945, there has been a steady increase in the receipts shown in the annual reports, with the exception of 1950 when there was drop of over $4,000. Store Owner Nicked For $20 in Transaction A South Side business, man reported to police evening on a transaction in his store which left him $20 poorer. A tall, slender about 20 or 25 years old, dressed' in a leather jacket, and wearing no hat, came into the store and wanted a package of gum, he said. The man handed him a $20 bill for the small purchase, and the store owner had to go to the safe to get the change.

The latter then gave the man the gum, the change from the $20 and also the original $20 bill. The customer had asked him about an address on East Front Street, the business man told police. checked the address and learned the man had been there and was expected back about 10 o'clock with his wife for a room. Oil City Briefs Workmen of the L. O.

A large new neon sign was erected by the Acme Neon Sign ing store, 215 Seneca Street, this Service at the clothmorning. A Church Street woman phoned police at 2:11 a. m. today to ask assistance in getting her 20-monthold son to the hospital. They were taken by police cruiser to the hospital.

Donald Porter is the instructor of a class in meteorology which was started in the Monday night for senior and cadet members of the local CAP. Dr. R. S. Miller, assistant to the vice president of research and technology, U.

S. Steel will be the guest speaker at a meeting of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Society of Engineers at 8 p. m. Thursday in the Arlington Hotel. A total of 1,055 births was reported at the Oil City Hospital during 1953.

During 1951 there were 1.005 births reported, and in 1952 there were 1,015. The past year's report revealed 552 boys were born and 503 girls. Hovis, 214 Plumer Road, which was parked on the east side of Petroleum Street, headed north, was struck by an unidentified car going north on the street and the sedan was damaged to the extent of $50.
