We are careful buyers, and we have been in the furniture business a good many years, but as yet don't dare buy from catalogues.

Maybe if you get the import of this you'll realize how badly lost you'll be amid the maze of illustrations and vague descriptive matter of mail order houses. Besides, there's not the real pleasure of buying when you buy away from home. ON OLDROYD Walnut Block, West Fifth Avenue. Topeka, Kan. Aug. 18. pardon Jessie, so that I can marry her." This unusual request -was made to Governor Stubbs in behalf of Jessie Morrison by John Knight of Canton, Kan.

The plea was made by letter and was as fervid as an ardent lover could make it. "Jessie is not guilty of murder," sad Mr. Knight. "She killed Clara Castle in self-defense. Isn't it reasonable to suppose that Olin Castle; who had mistreated Jesse, gave his wife a razor to do Jessie harm it they came together? In the struggle that ensued between the two women, Jessie wrenched the razor from Mrs.

Castle's hand and used it to protect her own life." And then Mr. Knight said: "I am thoroughly convinced that Jessie is innocent. I love her dearly. I want to make her a happy bride. We can live together in peace and happi -ness on a farm here.

Please pardon Jessie so that I may marry Mr. Knight said he was not seeking notoriety in the matter. All he wanted was a good wife, such as Jessie would make. He hoped th-it there would be no publicity given, to the affair until after the pardon and marriage. But in the rush of work in th3 governor's office the letter fell into the regular stack of correspondenc and a correspondent got a look at it.

The plea has had no effect upon the governor, so far. Miss Morrison is still in the penitentoary. An effort is being made to learn more facts about the case. A banker of Canton was sounded, but said he didn't know who Knight was. But he observed that so many new peo ple were settling in the vicinity Canton that he was unable to keep up the acquaintance' of all of them.

Nothing is known here of the ar dent wooer. The postmaster sail there were some Knights on the rural route but he was not person ally acquainted with them. We have patronized you. Now patronize us. Grimes Brothers, 103 X.

Chairman of democratic State Committee Roasts Republicans. Marion, Aug. 18 H. S. Martin, chairman of the democratic state committee of has this to say regarding the action of the special session of congress in the enactment of the new tariff law and of the Stubbs administration.

"I have had several, conferences lately with the democrats in different parts of the state and I am greatly pleased with the agreement I find among them. The democrats are frequently reproached on ac- count of a lack of harmony in the party. The Republican party Is made up of organizable material, men who will follow Aldrich as readily as they will follow Roose velt, solicitous only for the offices The Democratic party in Kansas has not always been harmonious, but it is today. "1 In the belief that the his toric 'tariff for revenue only' doc trine is right. "2 In the belief that subservi ence to special interests has reach ed its highest point In the recent Republican tariff law.

"3 In a want of confidence in the socalled 'Republican insurgents. "The furore that some of the newspapers are stirring up over Bris tow, Murdock, has not fooled the Democrats. The Democrats question the sincerity of an alleged tariff reformer who is familiar with the making of the recent tariff law by the Republicans and still shouts from the housetop that he is a Re publican and a protectionist. Ordinarily when amember of a band of buccaneers is reformed he quits his old associates, but Bristow and Murdock continue to proclaim their allegiance to the Republican party and to the principle of protection for American monopolists. They are not 'fooling anybody." t.

The St. Louis Republic of Sunday has quite a good deal to say of Clare Patterson's record with the Guthrie team in the Western Association, on the eve of his transfer to the Cincinnati National League team.
