SECTION EOL I HT SI NDT RLTL VSD HfcRXl XND THE SINDY TIMES ARGLS DEC. 9. 1984 Shopping For A Video Recorder? DearAbby By ABIGAIL Van BUREN Suitor Sees Widow At His Own Convenience evening. Be busy, and if he keeps calling, pin him down for a dinner date or a movie, and see what happens. down from tapes getting stuck inside.

Programmability: Basic models let you set the timer at least three days in advance to record a TV program. Higher-priced units let you record two or more events on different channels and set the timer more than a week or so in advance. Cable-ready: To preprogram a VCR to record more than one scrambled cable TV program, you normally have to rent special equipment from your cable company. You might not have to if your VCR is cable-ready, for an extra $10 or so. But the cable-ready feature only works on some cable systems and it doesn't work on premium channels like HBO.

Ask your cable company about it. Remote control: This feature is found even on low-priced models, such as the Sony SL-2300 ($500 suggested retail; less than $350 discounted). Scanning and special effects: Visible fast forward and reverse (search) locate any spot you want on a tape and make it easier to skip over commercials. Many of the lowest-priced machines now offer this feature. You have to pay more to get freeze frame, slow motion and rapid motion.

Number of recording heads: Machines with four recording heads generally have better picture quality for special effects, but no noticeable improvement for regular viewing. Stereo and hi-fi options: It could easily be another five years or so until most TV shows are in stereo, so if youre willing to spend the $600 or more required for a stereo VCR, also consider the added advantages of a hi-fi unit. Stereo is merely two-channel TV, but a hi-fi VCR can sound better than your audio system. Beta hi-fi units start around $600, but dont expect to get VHS hi-fi for less than $750. Consider investing in a portable VCR if you plan to buy a video camera soon.

For around $800 you can get a two-piece portable with a tuner-timer for home'and a separate recorder you carry when using a camera. If youre not sure youll want a camera, you could buy a table model and later look at the new one-piece camera-recorder (camcorder) combinations. With a camcorder, there are three formats to choose from: Beta, VHS and the new 8mm tape. The 8mm format is good for making your own movies, but there is no prerecorded material available on it yet. By CHANGING TIMES The Kiplinger Magazine Saturday night at the movies no longer has to mean driving, parking and standing in line to pay $4 or $5 a person to see the only good movie in town.

Home is the showplace, when youve got a video cassette recorder. Prices now start at less than $300 and range to at least $1,000 for the ultra models. But dont be drawn into buying lots of extra features you'll end up never using. The basic models provide plenty of features, which is one reason why certain low-cost models could be in short supply this Christmas. What might prove less popular are the new video cassette players, which may sell for $50 to $100 less than a VCR but cant record TV' shows.

VCRs use two standard recording formats of comparable quality. Beta and VHS. Both use 4 -inch-wide recording tape, but cassettes aren't interchangeable. Selecting the same format that your friends have allows you to share and exchange tapes PLEAS ANT MANOR, COMMUNITY CARE HOME 48 Nichols Street Rutland, Vt. 05701 775-2941 For more information Contact Social Services DeptJ Beta machines are sold by Sony, Toshiba, NEC and Sanyo.

Gose to 20 companies sell VHS models, for which there are only about seven actual manufacturers, including Matsushita, JVC and Hitachi. With VHS youre likely to find a wider selection of models, features and accessories, as well as a broader selection of cassettes at most shops. But a VHS model can sell for $100 more than a comparable Beta model. Before you buy a Beta machine, make sure youll have access to enough prerecorded cassettes. Although every title is recorded in both formats, most stores carry a greater number of VHS titles.

Some no longer carry Beta titles. When you go looking at various machines. Changing Times magazine suggests that you consider the following features: Belt drive or direct drive: Machines with belt drive often cost less than direct-drive models, but expect to pay $125-200 every two to three years for belt replacement. Tape loading: Most recent models load in front instead of the top. This makes for more convenient placement of the unit, but front-In-iriorc can be more prone to break- WE'RE SORRY! Hes 49 and recently divorced for the second time. Hes semiretired and quite well-off. Im a 47-year-old widow in comfortable circumstances. He calls me every day, comes over in the evening to watch TV, play cards, have coffee and talk, but he has never taken me out. I stopped inviting him to dinner because he never reciprocated.

We see each other only during the week never on the weekend. He says he doesnt like to make plans meaning for dinner or a movie; he prefers to do things on the spur of the moment. He loves to garden and is very handy at fixing things. He sprayed my front and backyard for weeds and worked on my Kimball organ. I do not chase after him.

I never call him and never ask him what he does when hes not with me. He acts like hes vpry fond of me, and I think Im falling in love with him. I love being with him, but I want to go somewhere! He told me his second wife wants him back, so hes probably seeing her on the weekends. (I never ask.) Abby, do you see any future in our relationship? Why do you think hes never taken me anywhere? And how can I find out where I stand with him? PUZZLED IN NEW JERSEY DEAR PUZZLED: If theres a future in your relationship, its not in the immediate future. He doesnt take you anywhere because hes either too cheap to spend the money, or he has a commitment with someone else, which is probably why you never see him on the weekends.

However, no attempt is made to duplicate the arrangements since new figures are often added. Work begins at the top of the tree as the gold- and silver-plated, copper and lucite tree ornament Espinoza designed is placed at the pinnacle. The electrified candles are then installed and the angels, starting with those at the top, are arranged on the tree.

Shielded spotlights hidden in the trees branches illuminate each of the approximately 20-inch-long angels. Take The Fayva Fashion Boot Challenge! vV DEAR ABBY: A charitable organization I have worked for is honoring me at a dinner in recognition of my many years of service.

I have only one son. He is over 50, married and has a nice family. I invited him to come to the dinner, but he refused, saying, No. Those affairs bore me. He lives very near to where the dinner is being held, so I told him he could skip the dinner and just come for the presentation.

He refused. The chairman of the dinner committee called my son and asked if he would please come and say a few words in my behalf. He was also turned down with, No. Those affairs bore me. The man was shocked, as he knows how generous I have been to my son and his family over the years.

All my friends and relatives are coming. What should I say when they ask me why my son didnt come to see me honored? HURT IN LOS ANGELES DEAR HURT: Look them straight in the eye and say, He was invited, but he said, No. Those affairs bore me. Dont feel that you should cover up for your sons inexcusable behavior. Youre not the only parent who ended up with a selfish, thankless child.

The goal, said Ms. Howard, is perfection a goal which she says she inherited from her mother. My mother took the tree from our home and gave it to the museum so everyone could share its beauty, she said. Though not everyone can visit the museum to see the tree, Ms. Howard has remedied this lack by writing a book describing and picturing the tree and its most celebrated decorations.
