So vital are these words that we are going to use them as three steps to a disciplined self.

GOODRICH DEFIANCE TIRES Now Only $9.9 exchange plus tax 11 NEW ENGLAND 9,454 624 SOUTH ATLANTIC 20,180 13.32 EAST SOUTH CENTRAL 11,393 7.52 Vegetable by Day A Rose by Night You're in Fashion! By BARBARA BUNDSCHU, United Press Fashion Writer. NEW YORK UP Wear a vegetable by day and a rose by night, and you're right in there pitching with the Hollywood fashion leaders, designer Howard Shoup and opera star Nadine Conner said today. Shoup and Miss Conner, his business partner, showed their made-in-movieland clothes in New York for the first time last week. They were an eye-catching bunch, more dress-up than daytime, featuring some fabulous fabrics and romantic trimmings. The "imported vegetables" a bunch of miniatures in shades of squash hung at the waist of a dun-colored crepe afternoon dress.

The roses rose-colored hung almost any where a rose might hang, mostly on dresses which were also rose-colored. Shoup had other eye-catching trimmings as well sequins, metallic embroidery, braid and lace to avoid any possible monotony. Color contrast was also widely used for eye-catching a navy wool lace cocktail dress had Kelly green taffeta under its full one-side drape and around the top of its navy slipi Shoup feels wool lace is in for a come-back, incidentally, because it's so "very warm and clinging." When there's ho glitter- or contrast added, Shoup makes his dresses earn their bows with the magnificence of their fabrics. There's an irridescent taffeta with the colorings of a fire opal, another that looks like heather. A slim strapless dress comes in pink and silver brocade with an over-skirt that doubles as a cape in white nylon net.

Deep sapphire, garnet and grape shades are alternated with flattering soft rose colors. Not obscured by the trimmings and the spotlight-catching fabrics are lines which cling like that wool lace and maybe need a little distraction to keep them absolutely modest. Red Ink for Teacher EAST ST. LOUIS, 111. UP Esther Reeb, a high school teacher, called in a 16-year-old student.

"I'm giving you an F' (for flunk) in English," she said. Without a word, he picked up a bottle of red ink, poured it on her head and strode from the room. EGRET, HERON AND STORK NEST ABOVE THE FLOODS During Venezuela's, rainy season, species of egret, heron, ibis, stork, and other wading birds escape land enemies by nesting above protective floods. In exchange, they accept the hazard of the razor-tooth piranha, or canmbal fish, notes the National Geographic Society. When wind or rain dislodges an egg or young of the nesting birds, vicious horde of piranhas rushes the spot where the victim falls into the water, and in seconds it devoured. Peculiar herring-bone markings, visible on television receivers and caused by nearby amateur radio stations, may be eliminated by a device called a "harmoniker" in most cases. 0 lines everywhere, may be in dan ger of losing its reputation as rather benevolent volcano and a welcome moneymaker.

It has never caused a known death in modern times, although there is always a chance its current pyrotechnics may spoil the record. Mauna Loa is the world's most active volcano and a prolific lava producer, but its explosions rarely cause the widespread rock and ash showers which may bring sudden death. Many Hawaiians, therefore, have become fond of their fire spewing mountain. Some of its volcanic areas have formed part of a national park since 1916, and each eruption is always followed by a boom in the tourist trade, accompanied by the pleasant ring ing of local cash registers. The island owes its best tourist attraction to a crack in the floor of the Pacific Ocean, notes the National Geographic So ciety.

This tremendous fissure in the earth's surface permitted Mauna Loa's birth ages ago. Breaking the Crust. When the earth's "crust" is of inferior strength.the fluid and immensely hot substratum may rush upward, often forming new islands. Hawaii itself thus came into being. Now Mauna Loa is an escape point for molten rock from many miles deep within the core of the globe.

The frequent activity of this particular volcano is probably why its explosions have not been far worse. The lava vents of long dormant volcanoes become choked, and when they do explode the "stopper" of rock and ash is blown far and wide. Mauna Loa's crest, more than 13,000 feet high, has a deep pit nearly two miles wide and twice that distance in length. Lava spewing from this trapdoor formed the mountain, but the thunderous discharges of the most recent eruption come from vents at lower levels. Hilo's Narrow Escape.

The people of Hilo, largest community on the island of Hawaii, have had two spectacular narrow escapes from the wrath of Mauna Loa. A lava flow stopped just a half mile from the city in 1881. During a 1935 eruption Navy fliers saved Hilo from a molten river by dropping 6,000 pounds of bombs in order to divert the flow into the ocean. The latest eruptions have been on the opposite side of the mountain from Hilo. The awesome beauty of volcanoes in action has given rise to many Hawaiian legends.

Burning cones are the pits dug with a magic spade by Pele, the native goddess of fire. And when the mountain giants sear the air and countryside with fiery exhalations, Pele and her sisters are dancing madly deep within the craters. Man Who Swallowed Hardware is Sought GARY, Ind. UP Police and hospital officials today sought an unidentified man who ran away after an operation which removed almost a pound of hardware he swallowed to protest his arrest. A spokesman at Mercy Hospital said the man, whom he declined to identify, had swallowed: Five small bed springs, six double-edged razor blades, 12 pieces of flexible steel from bed supports, nine pieces of bent wire, two crushed light bulbs, one crushed salt shaker, four needles, three safety pins, three spoons, an aspirin box.

The man swallowed the assorted hardware last March while being held in jail. Police said the only explanation the man gave for swallowing the articles was: "I was so mad about being tossed in jail that I guess I went a little crazy." Laurel Queen Crowned WELLSBORO, Pa. For to have self at the center is to have a cancer at the center, because cancer cells are cells that make other cells con tribute to them, instead of making themselves contribute to other cells.

A self-attentive person lives in a state of self-reference. "How will this affect me? What do I get out of this?" Such a person is disliked by others and is disliked by himself. Decide, then, what shall have your primary attention. Decide, as you go into the shrine of your heart, to what you are going to bend the knee. If the Kingdom of God has your allegiance, then make your loyalty absolute.

Don't say "Yes" and "No." Don't be what my friends calls a "Yes, but-ter," "I'll do it, but." Let there be no "buts" anywhere. Put Christ once and for all at the center of your attention. Then you live in a state of Christ-reference instead of a state of self-reference. To shift the very basis of your life in this way will not be easy; the self will wriggle and twist and beg off and compromise do every thing except abdicate. A pastor arose our Ashram and said, "I see what I need, and I see that don't want what I need." He still loved himself first, even amid the wreckage caused by that fact of self-love.

But this resolve to center Christ in your life is a decisive decision. It is a decision that de cides all decisions a seed decision. my God, I have been out of and all life's pictures have been blurred and distorted.
