Canadian road which was so vital to the protection of our northernmost outposts against the Jape, is due today at the Roxy Theatre. It is Paramounfs "Alaska -starring Richard Arlen and Jean Parker, with Ralph Sanford, BUI Henry, Joe Sawyer and Eddie Quil-lan. The picture has all the earmarks of being a fast-paced thriller with its story of two brothers, fighting the elements, and each other, pitched against the hazardous undertaking.

Richard Arlen and Bill Henry play the brothers; Jean Arthur is the cause of their fighting. Both men are engineers. Their father (played by Harry Shannon) is placed in charge of the construe tion job as an Army Major. Jean to Alaska with the crew, accompanying her own engineer father. It Is Oscar Ho-molka, playing the part of a coal tycoon and personal friend to Goering. The love theme gets off to a flying start when Homolka's lovely daughter, Luise Rainer, falls madly in love with a leading figure the underground, handsome Arturo de Cordova. How this 'romantic couple gives the Gestapo the slip provides a climax that will give you a real thrill. The story concerns itself with band of terrorists who are blowing up Nazi installations and making things decidedly unpleasant for the Herrenvolk. When the underground leader, William Bendix, impersonating a moronic wash room attendant, unexpectedly becomes a Nazi hostage, things begin to happen.

The underground" machinery goes into high gear as de Cordova, who avoids the suspicion of the Nazis by acting as their translator, and Xatina Paxinou, the baker-woman, attempt to effect the release of Bendix. Every member of the notable cast performs brilliantly. The stars of "Hostages" include Paul Lukas, who scored sensationally In "Watch on the Rhine," Katina Paxinou, famous Pilar of "For Whom the Bell Tolls," and Arturo de Cordova, Latin-America's most famous romantic star; in addition to two-time Academy Award winner, Luise Rainer, and William Bendix. That should be enough i recommendation for any movie devotee to place "Hostages" high-up on his "must- list i BETTX GBABLE and VICTOR MATURE in a scene from the Technicolor Musical, "Song of the Islands," which plays Thursday and Friday at the Strand. Also in the cast are Jack Oakie, Thomas Mitchell, Hilo If attie and Harry Owens and his Royal Hawaiians.

The picture is "Old Acquaintance," which reunites the two great stars of "The Old Maid," Bette Davis and Miriam Hopkins. "Old Acquaintance. based upon the Broadway success of the same name by John Van Druten, who also collaborated on the screen play with Lenore Coffee, was directed by Vincent Sherman and features Gig Young, John Loder Dolores Moran.

Bette Davis is cast as Kit Marlowe, successful young novelist who visits her home town as the guest of her childhood friend, Millie Drake. (Mirian Hopkins), hard, calculating young matron, with a soft feminine exterior. Although happily married and an expectant mother she secretly envies Kit and strives to emulate her. Superficially prolific, she writes a sugar-coated novel and, with the aid of Kit, it becomes a huge success. The next eight years see Millie as the author of as many consecu Styne and Sam Cahn.

The widely popular "Johnny Doughboy," by Al Goodheart is sung by Pat Brook, and Pat and Jane harmonize together on "Better Not Roll Blue, Blue Eyes" by the same composer. A highlight of the musical numbers' is Franz Shubert's "Ave Maria," sung by Bobby Breen.
