Drake, who was found shortly after noon, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:30 p.m. by Wyoming County Coroner Thomas Kukuchka. Drake died of asphyxiation due to drowning, Kukuchka said. In the Pittston and WilkesBarre areas, searchers had no luck finding two other men presumed drowned in the Susquehanna. Bernie Chipoloski, 24, of Plains, disappeared under the murky river's surface Sunday about 8:30 p.m.

while he was swimming with friends in Exeter near the Coxton railroad bridge, said Scott Trethaway, commander of the Luzerne County Dive Team. Wilbur Coolbaugh, 33, of Wilkes- Barre, jumped off the Market Street Bridge in WilkesBarre after telling a police officer of family troubles, police said. The officer saw Coolbaugh jump. One other person, who was presumed drowned Sunday afternoon at Lake Wallenpaupack, didn't drown after all, Wayne County Coroner Dr. Edward Murray said.

Murray said an autopsy showed Cecelia Rossi, 52, of Eynon appears to have died of natural causes, though the autopsy was so far inconclusive about what the cause might be. In Tunkhannock, rescuers, during four hours of searching for Drake on Sunday, only recovered Drake's tackle box, a sneaker and other gear from a man who plucked them from the water. He apparently fell in about 8:30 a.m. after his boat capsized, authorities said. They resumed their search Monday at 10:30 a.m.

Fewer than two hours later, they found Drake's body 300 to 400 yards west of the Susquehanna River bridge over Route 29 and about 25 to 30 feet from the south shoreline in eight feet of water. In the Pittston area drowning, seven boats, a state police helicopter and 50 volunteers searched the river and its shoreline for Chipoloski again Monday from about 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., said Don Skursky, Exeter's fire chief. APTs are accurate as of June 25, 1996. THE TRIBUNE, SCRANTON, PA TUESDAY, JULY 9, 1 1996 RIVER: Susquehanna dangerous dangerous FROM PAGE A1 Scott Trethaway, commander of the Luzerne County Dive and Rescue Team and Mark Henn, cocaptain of the Tunkhannock Ambulance Rescue Team. "It's an unforgiving waterway and extremely deceiving," Trethaway said. The surface looks mostly flat. Underneath, the bed is covered with slippery rocks and webs of trees and other debris that have built up over centuries, the two men said.

In one place near where Chipoloski went under, there's a 37-foot deep hole for some reason, Trethaway said. Water flowing over the different heights of river bed creates all sorts of tricky, swirling currents that are deceptively strong, he said. On Sunday, the river was flowing about 5 to 6 mph, more than three times as fast as normal, which only added to the danger, Trethaway said. In Luzerne County, add in decades of deep coal mining, which dumped debris into the river, and the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster, he said. During the disaster, a huge NOTICE OF PARTIAL REDE LIPTION LAKELAND SCHOOL DISTRICT General Obligation Bonds, Series of 1960 8.875% Due Auguet 15, 2010, CUSIP 511850 BF6 NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that pursuant to the terms of the Resolution dated as of July 29, 1980 that $135,000 principal amount of the Lakeland School District bonds have been called for redemption on August 15, 1906 at par value plus accrued interest to the date fixed for redemption.

Dated this 8th day of July, 1906. LAKELAND SCHOOL DISTRICT BY: PNC BANK, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION Paying Agent hole opened up in the river's bed near Jenkins Twp. because a greedy mining company owner had men dig too close to the bed. The resulting whirlpool not only ended deep mining forever in the Wyoming Valley but also contributes to the river's tricky swirls and eddies, Trethaway said. Trethaway said dive-team members have done their best to map the currents at different river levels, but the swirls of current remain uncertain at best.

Even divers have to be careful when they go under searching for drowning victims because the debris can entangle them, he said. For all those reasons, both men say people should stay out of the river. If someone wants to fish, Henn recommends wading no more than three or four feet from the shoreline. Otherwise, "it'll knock you right off your feet," he said. And always, always wear a personal flotation device.

Fishermen don't like to wear them because they're uncomfortable, Henn said. "They're very, very hot," he said. But, as the rescuers pointed out, neither Drake nor Chipoloski was wearing one.
