James H. Lynch Jr. announced yesterday that the secretary of state had approved the new name, the final step "in making the membership open to anyone who lives or works in Berkshire County." Earlier this year the credit union won approval from the state Division of Banks to open its membership to anyone who lives and works in Berkshire County. To celebrate, Lynch said, the credit union plans an open house for existing and new members April 23 and the week of April 25-30. He said the membership vote March 14 was for the name Community Credit Union, with Greylock Credit Union an alternative.

Subsequently, he said, it was discovered that a credit union in Lynn is called Community Credit Union. The Greylock Credit Union is an independent financial institution wholly owned by its members. With assets of more than $272 million, it is the county's third-largest financial institution, serving more than 26,000 members.
