On the Web: www.BerkshireEngle.com Media C4 The Berkshire Eagle, Wednesday, January 9, 2002 2nd season New shows, new starts Outrage at CNN over promo touting Paula Zahn as 'sexy' Comfort food TV will be joined by some more adventurous fare. John and Nick Thrturro star. The exhaustive Burns presents the definitive video biography of Mark Twain Jan. 14-15 on PBS. ABC passed, so NEC is presenting a 25th-anniversary retrospective of the ABC miniseries Roots, Jan.

18. The movie Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers bows Jan. 19 on Sci-Fi. In Stephen King's six-hour miniseries Rose Red, a psychology professor tries to prove to her department chairman that "the unexplained" exists. Before long, unexplained events are happening with great regularity at a haunted mansion called Rose Red.

Nancy Travis, Kimberly Brown, Judith Ivey and, in his final performance, David Dukes star. Jan. 27, 28 and 31 on ABC. Guilty Hearts (Feb. 10 and 13, CBS) is one of those based-on-fact small-town true-crime stories about a doctor, a favorite patient and the doctor's wife.

Treat Wilhams, Marcia Gay Harden and 013rmpia Dukakis star. By Mike McDaniel The Houston Chronicle If America's viewing habits have revealed anything since the attacks of Sept. 11, it's our desire to be cloaked in the familiar. So-called "comfort-food television" ruled the fall, drawing us back to "Fiends" and giving colossal success to the Carol Burnett reunion special in November. It may also have figured prominently in the lukewarm response to edgy or offbeat new shows such as "24" and "The Tick." As television entered its so-called second season this week, it continued to offer us comfort food.

But January and February television also will be about new shows and new beginnings. If it seems to be an unusually active January, it's because networks hope to make their rating marks before Fbmary, when the Winter Olympic Games will wipe out hopes that any network other than NBC will bring home Nielsen gold. business tapes. This is a rich mine for comedy writers, but don't discount the capable cast especially Margaret Smith, who's hilarious as the record-store owner. Grade: A-Lovingly written and directed by Gregory Nava, The American Family finally makes it to the small screen.

Rejected in 2000 by CBS, the series about a Latino family was shopped everywhere else, and PBS bought it. The debut episode Jan. 23) is terrific. Olmos and Sonia Braga play patriarch and matriarch of a proud, loving family struggling to live the American Dream. Their problems are not unlike those faced in any other American home financial troubles, pregnancy out of wedlock, child-custody disputes, unexpected death, drugs.

The beauty of this series is that we see them through fresh eyes. The stunning cast includes Raquel Welch, Esai Morales and Constance Marie. Grade: A By Lisa DeMoraes The Washington Post PASADENA, Calif. CNN executives say they're "outraged" that their network ran a promo that touted morning newscaster Paula Zahn as "just a little sexy" to what sounds like a zipper being unzipped. "I was outraged and so was Paula Zahn, who has spent more than 20 years proving her credibility day in and day out on the air," CNN Chairman and CEO Walter Isaacson said in a statement Monday He called the ad "a major blunder" by CNN's promotions department and insisted that the promo, which ran over the weekend, was "never seen or approved by anyone outside our promotions department" before it was telecast.

"I had no knowledge of the promo until it aired; when I saw it I was offended," Zahn said in her statement on the subject. And a CNN rep wanted us to know that Isaacson, Zahn and Jamie Kellner, chairman of CNN parent Rimer Broadcasting, each called the network independently when they saw the spot, demanding that it be pulled. The 15-second ad ran about 10 times before it was yanked, estimates one CNN source. In the ad, a voice asks, "Where can you find a morning news anchor who's provocative, super-smart, oh yeah, and just a little sexy?" as the words "provocative" and "sexy" are flashed on the screen, along with quick shots of Zahn's profile and Zahn's lips. At that point, the background music stops and a noise is heard that, if you're from Zahn's former network, Fox News Channel which had a field day with this one Monday sounds like a zipper being unzipped, and if you're an insider at CNN you'd swear was the sound of a needle scratching an LP A needle scratching an LP? Zahn, formerly with CBS News and at the time with Pox News Channel, was hired last year to anchor CNN's new morning news show.

After learning of her CNN deal, FNC announced it had fired Zahn. Monday FNC wanted to make sure that the Reporters Who Cover Television were aware of the On-Air Zahn Zipper Caper. And Brit Hume wrapped his evening newscast by promising viewers that Fox News would continue to be "fair," "balanced," but, "I'm afraid, not even a little bit sexy." After which FNC viewers heard that zipping noise. Kellner, a former Hollywood executive, launched the Fox and WB networks before turning his attention to CNN; among his early moves was hiring thespian Andrea Thompson, best known for appearing seminude on "NYPD Blue," to anchor Headline News. Kellner took some heat when pictures of Thompson from adult flicks started appearing on the Internet.

ing conservative chief justice with a passion for Oklahoma football. Durning is a reciter of limericks who is liable to fall asleep on the bench. The real star is Joe Mantegna, who plays the newest jurist, a liberal-leaning, bearded father of two. Executive producer Don Bellisario zeroes in on him and his three law clerks. But the show is truly money whenever Garner's on the screen.

After a Tuesday debut, the series will move to 8 p.m. aidays. Grade: Kevin Williamson returns to the WB with a mystery series, a tough genre to crack. He'll have to do better than the pilot of Glory Days-to prove he's up to the challenge. In the first episode, a burned-out writer, Mike (Eddie Cahill), returns to his island home of Glory, a a the Island of Weird, where unusual events occur every day.

Mike is not welcomed; the islanders weren't happy with how they were portrayed in his book. Still, the debut show (Jan. 16) suggests that Mike's mom (Frances Fisher) and two sisters and other islanders will figure prominently when murder occurs. It's not clear whether Williamson is seeking to make a "Murder, She Wrote" for young people or something more ambitious. Grade: I couldn't help laughing at That '80s Show (Jan.

23, FA), which spins Ronald Reagan and the Me Decade the way "That "70s Show" skewers the drug culture and the disco generation. Both shows are produced by the same people. The new show's principals are Corey (Glenn Howerton), who's trying to keep his liberal soul and make it in the music world he works at a record store. His best friend, Roger (Eddie Chin), has already gone over to the dark side, quoting trickle-down economic theories and listening to motivational Sneak peek Here's a hint of what the networks plan for March and beyond: The strongest March series we've previewed is ABC's The Web, a sitcom that takes delight in skewering network TV and its brass. headlines an ensemble cast. Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars in the unpreviewed sitcom Watching El lie, NBC. PBS try to match "The 1900 House" with The Frontier House. A family will try to survive using only the amenities available to American pioneers. Sally Field attempts to give Joe Mantegna a lesson in jurisprudence with her own Supreme Court drama, ABC's The Court.

The WB unveils the strange new series A Young Person's Guide (to Being a Rock Star). It's likely CBS could have Survivor IV ready to go by March. The new series NBC threatens that Hank Azaria will play several characters in the new comedy Imagine That, but I hope not. Based on last night's premiere, Azaria is funnier playing his recurring character, a self-effacing comedy writer whose struggles at work parallel his frustrations at home. The only episode we saw is overloaded with sexual themes and language, but the laughs are sometimes there as Josh (Azaria) and wife Wendy (Jayne Brook) talk with a psychologist about intimacy issues.

The supporting cast is strong, including Katey Sagal With and Joshua Malina They need better lines, however. Never mind that woman with the thong in Episode 1. Grade: BIn the CBS Supreme Court drama First Monday (Jan. 15), 'James Garner is a cigarette-smok Specials galore The presidents series on The American Experience has been unequaled in its grasp of subject matter and attention to detail. Part two of PBS' two-parter on the unusual presidency of Woodrow Wilson airs this Sunday.

The cable channel WE (Women's Entertainment) presents a Fhdaynight concert series. On tap Jan. 11 is Sarah McLachlan. Jan. 18: Melissa Etheridge.

Jan. 25: Pat Rena-tar. Three generations of a Midwestern dynasty are chronicled in' the MEE remake of The Magnificent Ambersons, Jan. 13. The Machiavellian machinations behind "Monday Night Football" are exposed in the TNT movie Monday Night Mayhem, Jan.

14. Stu-lloyd is dead. The Really Big Cheeses at the Mouse House Monday creamed Stu Bloomberg, one of the two heads of Disney's TV entertainment division that were Stu-lloyd, in response to the ratings disaster that has befallen ABC this season. Lloyd Braun, the slicker head, becomes Chairman All by Himself. He will now have to finish his own sentences and low-five himself when he deftly dances around questions at the television press tour, which ironically started up again here Monday.

Stu lloyd was supposed to show up for ABC's day on Sunday. Stu and Lloyd were the guys who, as heads of development at Disney's TV production division, Touchstone TV, had the difficult task of selling series to themselves as heads of ABC's prime-time entertainment division. That may explain why for the past several years ABC's scripted series development has been a flop. 'No years ago, when "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" was hot, running four times a week and putting ABC on top of the ratings heap, this didn't matter so much. Now that "Millionaire" has lost 42 percent of its overall audience and 44 percent of its young viewers compared with last season, the lack of new scripted series is a big, expensive problem.

ABC finished the November sweeps in fourth place in both viewers overall and the 18-to-49-year-old crowd that advertisers will pay top dollar to reach, and the network could very well finish the 2001-02 TV season in fourth place for the first time. The network does not have a single show in the top 10 among young viewers. As part of the restructuring, Susan Lyne, a former print journalist who has run ABC's successful movie and miniseries division, was named president of ABC Entertainment, getting half of Stu's job. perkshire Cable HighlightsWednesday Pittsfield Community Television today in Pittsfield, Dalton and Richmond on Time Warner Cable Channel 16, as indicated: '8 a.m. MMTV: Monument Mountain Television.
