Doctors believe many narcoleptics go undiagnosed because they realize anything is wrong. Sleep is regarded as beneficial and most people believe they get too much of a good thing.

Until recently the incidence of narcolepsy had been only vaguely estimated. But a San Francisco Bay study carried out established that a conservative estimate of the number of sufferers in the United Stes is 100,000 or 0.5 per cent of the population.
