The intelligence heretofore given of the condition of our townsman. Hon. George H. Bigelow. has prepared our readers for the announcement of his decease, which took place on Tuesday, at 5 :30 oclock a.

m. George Henry Bigelow was born on May 21, 1838, in Buckingham, near Ottawa, Canada, where his father, the late Lawrence G. Bigelow was then in business. "When he was a boy of 11 years, in the summer of 1849, his father cameto Burlington to George fitted for col lege here, and entered the Universitv, from which he graduated in 1858, and of which he was always a loyal son. In the fall of 1860, he bought the Burlington Times, which had been established two vears previous by D.

The law presupposses knowledge and therefore convicts the man who excuses crime by ignorance If I had only known has often been an unfortunate mans apology for some evil unknowingly wrought, but in' a matter of general interest as for instance that laudanum is a poison, that naptha is a deadly explosive, that blood heavily charged with' a winter's accumulations of the waste of the system it Is one's duty to know the fact aud the consequences thereof. Our good okl grandmothers knew for instance, that the opening of spring was the most perilous period of the vear. Why? Because then the blood stream is sluggish and chilled by the cokl weather, and if not thinned a good deal and made to flow quickly and healthfully through the arteries and veins, it is impossible to have good vigor the rest of the year. Hence, without exception, what is now known as Warner's Log Cabin Sarsaparilla.

The Democratic State Committee has issued a call for the convention to be held at Montpelier on Thursday, May 10, to elect delegates to the national convention at St. Louis and to nominate candidates for state officers. The call is as follows The Democrats and all citizens of Vermont who approve the administration of Grover Cleveland, and favor pure, economical, and constitutional government, and intend to prove their sincerity and earnestness in this behalf by supporting the Democratic state and national tickets in 1888, are invited to join in electing delegates to assemble in state convention at Montpelier, on Thursday, May 10, 1888, at 10 :30 a. for the purpose of electing delegates and alternates to the Democratic National Convention to be held at St. Louis the 5th of June.

was appointed regimental quartermasters sergeant, and in May, 1863, was promoted to be second lieutenant and was acting quartermaster during most of the remainder of the term of service of the regiment. In 1867 he succeeded William H. Hoyt as postmaster of Burlington, which office he held for four years. In 1871 he became assistant editor of the Free Press and Times, which position he held for several years. In 1872 he represented Chittenden county in the State Senate.

He was one of the delegates at large to the Republican national convention of 1876, at Cincinnati, which nominated Hayes for president. In 1878 or 79, he was appointed a special agent of the postoffice department, which he held till about four years ago. when symptoms of the disease of the brain, which finally destroyed began to be manifest. Under the progress of this disease he became a hopeless invalid but was fortunate in having the companionship of a sister, whose devotion, watchfulness, and self-denying care throughout his long and most trying illness, words are not sufficient to describe. Several months ago.

he sank, one day, into unconsciousness from which it was not supposed at that time he would ever rally but lie revived and was for a time more comfortable than liefore. On Friday last, a similar paralysis of his powers took place, under which lie sank steadily till he breathed his last. His sister. Miss Elizabeth Bigelow of this city and brother, Lucius Bigelow, of Portland, Oregon, are the only survivors of his father's family. Mr.

Bigelow known familiarly to so many friends as George was in many respects a remarkable man. Inheriting his fathers entire abhorence of human slavery he was an active and ardent Republican. He was a genuine Vermonter, proud of his state and interested in everything which concerned its welfare. As a journalist in which capacity he was perhaps best known, he was able, inclustrious. earnest and independent, with a keen scent for news, and a large measure of the indescribable quality which has been called the newspaper sense.

He had a wonderful power of reniemlering names and fact's, and a keen interest in persons, which with his geniality as a companion gave him hosts of acquaintances and friends. Probably not more than two or three men in Vermont had as wide an acquaintanceship as he had, in his day. Ilis kindly heart never harbored malice aud found it hard to retain long even the sense of injury. His vein of humor was well nigh irrepressible, and he never allowed a good story to be lost because it happened to lie at his own expense. His generous disposition made him always ready to share whatever he had with a friend or with any one in need.

One so genial, kindly and witty could not but have hosts of friends, and he will be mourned all over our state, and in other states, by a wide circle of acquaintances, who have learned with pain of the failure of his powers and will long hold him in affectionate 4ft Fifty dozen more of those CELEBRATED CORSETS Which we are selling at 50c. ro WALL PAPER. Benner Prophecies for 1 888. Samuel Benner, an Ohio farmer, who has gained considerable notoriety through the newspapers for his predictions of future events, and who a few years ago published a small volume on the ups and downs of prices, which had a great sale, has now communicated his prophecies for the year 1888, in which he says: This year, 1888, beiug the closing year in this cycle of low prices seven years from 1881 is the golden opportunity to commence the foundation of a business. If there is any benefit to be derived from a knowledge of these cycles in trade, it wiil be in taking advantage of them. Yonng men who are about to commence their business career should embrace their present opportunity. There are but few of these chances in an ordinary life.

It requires about tea years to complete au up aud down iu general tradth When the depressions which follow commercial crises reach their lowest limit, as di. rniined by these price cycles, they afford the best opportunities for investment, ami the height of speculative eras are the most dangerous periods to make a commencement in any enterprise. This is the opportunit for investors to open a mine, to bttild a furnace, to erect a mill, to build ship, to equip a railroad and to make investments in agricultural, commercial and industrial operations. George Peabody laid the foundation forhis fortune by buying American securities in one of our commercial depressions. New York Real Estate Journal.

Iho 1'lorlda Rattlesnake. The diamond back is scientifically known as crotalus horrid us. You will know what I mean: perhaps you will not. Po6siblv my statement of that zoological fact wiil only make cold chills creep down your back to no purpose. For the uamo itself is appalling, nnd this perhaps is the reason that the people of Florida who wish to encourage immigration merely allude to diamond backs lightly and cheerfully ns rattlers.

But there are rattlers nnd rattlers. The rattler of the north is more or less common; few have gone hnckleberrying often without encouraging one. The better the ground and day for finding berries the better the chance for rattlesnakes, too. But a long slick always made a short end of crotalus adamantens of northern New York. Were the engagement with crotalns horrid us of Florida, I shonld want an uncommonly long stick, nnd you might look with considerable certainty to find mo at the extreme end of it.

The common name by which this snake is known comes from the diamond pattern which nature, ever liberal with her dyes nnd designs, has printed upon its back. Nothing coukl be ucater or more becoming. And, 60 far as looks go, this crotalus is the haudsomest aud best dressed of his kind. But, since handsome is that handsome does only, the diamond back is not generally admired in the circles wherein he moves, breathes and principally has his being. St.

I am of the opinion that Mr. Hunter does not know anything about it. I will wager him the daily Herald for one year, that at the coming fall election neither Mr. Giddings, his sons, or any of the other three," or nine dissatisfied Democrats in Hubbardton, will vote the county, state, or national Republican ticket, and we will take their word for it. In conclusion, I may be allowed to say that I do not claim to be a great corrector, or denier, nor very smart, but am willing to leave the judgment about those matters to those people in Castleton, Hubbardton or Rutland who know E.
