1880. The chair appointed the following gentlemen as a committee to inform the governor-elect of hi election, and that the joint assembly was ready to receive any communication that he might wish to make; Senator Dillingham of YVash-ngton, Mr. Dartt of Wealhersfleld, Mr. age of Rutland, and Mr. Smith of Mobkton, were tee.

The committee appeared soon after escorting the governor and governor-elect, and the oath of office was then administered by the Hon. T. I. Redfield, one of the judges of the Supreme Court Governor Farnham then delivered hi message, which will be found elsewhere, after which the joiut assembly was dissolved and the House adjourned. Oct. 7. The case, Brownell vs. Troy and Boston railroad, was given to the Jury at five o'clock, who, fifteen minutes afterward, returned a verdict that the defendant was guilty in the manner alleged in declaration of plaintiff, and that the plaintiff recover damages in the sum of $1,900.50. A discharge in bankruptcy was given in the case Lemuel P.

7, 1880. The Senate was called to order by Lieutenant-Governor Colton. Devotional exercise by the chaplain, Rev. Edwin Wheclook. Journal of yesterday read and approved.

The oath was administered to the joint canvassing committee. On motion of Senator Peck, the Senate proceeded to the election of president, pro Om. Senator Henry nominated and Senator Cook seconded the nomination of Senator Gleed. Senator Safford nominated Senator Dana, seconded by Senator North. Tbe result of the ballot was as follows Whole number of votes 28 Necessary to a choice 15 Senator Gleed had 15 Senator Dana had 11 Senator Dillingham had 2 Senator Gleed was elected and received the oath of office, and, on taking the chair, expressed briefly his thanks for the honor conferred upon him.

The Senate repaired to the House of Representative to listen to the message of the retiring Executive, Governor Proctor. At noon the Senate reconvened, and adjourned without further business. HOrSK FORENOON. Reading of Scripture and prayer bv the chaplain. Journal of yesterday read and approved.

The speaker appointed Messrs. Hooker of Brattleboro and Scranton of Vergen-nes as a committee to wait on the Gov-ernor and inform him that the House was organized and ready for business. Resolution By Mr. Smith of Plain-field, that the speaker be instructed, in his nomination lo the House of members of the Judiciary committee, not to select thorn exclusively from any one profession or occupation. Mr.

Smith supported the resolution by remarks. Mr. Howe of Ludlow, Mr. Goodwin of Hartlaod and Mr. Fletcher of Cavendish, opposed the same.

On being put to the House, the resolution was iost. A message from the Senate by Mr. Brownell, secretary, announcing the appointment of a committee on the part of the Senate to canvass votes for State officers, and requesting the concurrence of the House in a joint resolution providing for a joint assembly. A message from His Excellency the Governor, by Mr. Stimson, Secretary of Civil and Military Affairs, that the Governor would deliver a valedictory message in joint assembly at such hour this forenoon as the two houses may fix Resolution By Mr.

The House then adopted iu concur-rhnee a joint resolution from the Senate providing for a joint assembly today at 2:30 o'clock to receive the report of the joint canvassing committee appointed to canvas the votes for State officers. A message from the Senate, by Mr. Brownell, secretary, that the Senate had adopted in concurrence the joint resolution providing for a Joint assembly to hear the valedictory message of the Governor. Bills introduced and referred By Mr. Taft of Burlington, an act relating to duties of States attorneys read twice and referred to committee on judiciary.

The hour of 45 minutes past 10 having arrived, the Senate appeared in the hall of the House of Representatives, pursuant to a resolution for a joint assembly to hear the valedictory message of the 1 Governor. JOINT ASSEMBLY. a His honor, Eben P. Colton, president of the Senate, in the chair Hon. Goo.

Nichols, secretary of State, clerk. Mr. Martin of Londonderry moved, Mr. Fifleld of Montpelier seconding, that a committee of one Senator and 4o members of the House bo appointed by the chair to wait upon tbe Governor, and inform him that the two Houses were met In joint assembly, and were awaiting his pleasure adopted. The chair appointed Senator Dana of Addison, Mr.

Hinckley of Chelsea and Mr. Taft of Burlington, as such committee, who soon after appeared with His Excellency. The retiring Governor, Hon. Redfield Proctor, then delivered his valedictory message, in person, which will bo found elsewhere. The joint assembly then dissolved and the House was then called to order.

The speaker announced as reporters of the House, Mr. Henry Oviatt of Montpelier and Mr. Edward Daua of Rutland. Mr. Ely -Goddard of Ely, moved that the House adjourn carried.

BENATB AFTERNOON. Senators Gleed, Weed and Blodgett were appointed a committee to eacort tbe Lieutenant-Go vernor-elect to the chair. The oath of office was then administered. His Honor spoke briefly, calling attention to the important work of the session, the revision of the laws and the proposed amendments to the constitution, and expressed a hope that the session would be harmonious, and that Slate taxation would be reduced. The Senate then adjourned.
