There were only two females in the production. The theme was by contemporary standards hopelessly square and every critic in New York thought Edwards' idea of a musical based on the American Revolution would be likely to set a record for the shortest run on Broadway. Yet the play "1776" written and composed by Sherman Edwards and set in the Revolutionary War period has won three Tony awards, the Drama Critics Circle award as the best musical of 1969.

If that sum had been put in the budget, Powell declared, "We would not be over-expanded." The annual audit prepared by Roger Flanagan of the Morris-town auditing firm of John W.
