McVea looking at NFL teams Lots of San Antonio football fans thought that Warren McVea would be anxious to return to S.A. to play WFL football because he was finished, washed up in the NFL. Sorry, not true. Sure, McVea was Riven his walking papers last year by the Kansas City Chiefs and, after refusing to play with the Detroit Wheels of the old WFL, he ended up playing briefly for another WFL club, the Shreveport Steamer. But that mean all NFL clubs have forget- ten the former Brack and UH flash.

Not by a long shot. In fact, McVea has been contacted by several NFL clubs and rumored that the Houston Oilers are especially interested in his talents. So, if the S.A. Wings hope to sign McVea, they may have to outbid several NFL teams. Perry Moss, head coach of the Wings, had a long meeting with McVea Monday and when asked for the results of those long talks, he replied, were just WARREN McVEA normal Moss added, definitely plans to play football this But where he will play is the big question.

San Antonio, of course, has the edge over NFL clubs in that this is home city. But the NFL teams have an edge because they are snugly cemented in a more established league. So probably boil down to money and benefits. Benefits? Yes, things like a no-cut contract, bonus, security, etc. more likely to receive a no-cut from S.A.

than he is from an NFL team but even the Wings eager to dish out many no-cut deals. McVea may be one of a few to warrant such a contract. Lomingr back next week? McVea now makes Houston his offseason home and he works for a recreation department in the Bayou City. One of nine children (five brothers, three sisters), Warren may be returning home next week for more talks with Moss and other Wing officials. was home last weekend for a family reunion and he told us be coming back next week for some kind of a his sister, Charlesetta, told me yesterday.

Meanwhile, Moss have the time to think only about McVea because he has to round up and sign enough players to open camp June 14. And he has lots of studying to do between now and Sunday because when he will draft two plavers from each of the other 10 WFL clubs. Several of the clubs have already turned in a 25-man protected list so Moss and his assistants are going over the long list of available players to determine which players should be drafted. Although he hopes to get some talented veterans in the draft, Moss noted that all players chosen Sunday be treated just like everybody else invite them to training camp and give them a chance to make our In other words, few if any of them will be given no-cut contracts. Amistad group growing About two years ago three San Antonians Robert Ibarra, Mateo Camargo and Gilbert Nieto decided to form a new youth organization now known as Amistad.

Their aim was simple. They wanted to start an organized youth program on the West Side so that youngsters would have a chance to spend their spare time playing games instead of joining gangs. was so says Ibarra, the only time this group would mess around with that group was when they met for a gang fight. all they had, gangs. And one gang never associated with another, except to That was two years ago.

Now over 600 West Side youngsters are actively participating in Amistad programs and the organization is expanding to the East Side. Most of the kids are from projects and Amistad offers them their only chance to participate in organized athletics. Right now some 34 teams are playing in the Amistad softball program mostly from the West Side but, for the first time, a few from East Side projects. Ibarra, Camargo and Nieto spend countless hours trying to improve and enlarge the program. The group is not funded by anyone.

They buy their bats, gloves, balls, shoes, etc. by raising money from car washes, car parking, cake sales, etc. Their goal is to spread the Amistad program to every part of the citv, into more sections of the East Side and all areas of the South and North sides of San Antonio. If anv group in the city is interested in joining this program, call 432-0129 and ask for Nieto. Or, if anybody is willing to let these teams use a gym of field, they would appreicate, and accept, the offer.

we hope for the whole city to be involved, for kids on the North Side to visit and compete against the kids on the West Side, and so explains Nieto. just believe the change in these kids now. They meet in various neighborhoods to play games, not to fight with knives.
