i A generous helping of holiday treacle By John Anderson Nwa Id" Movie Review The way Courtney B. Vance's character, the Rev. Henry Biggs, so thoroughly dominates "The Preacher's Wife," it should have been titled "The Preacher." Practicing something like liberation theology in something like Newark, N.J., Henry may be discouraged by the failing fortunes of his neighborhood church, but he does make a difference. And for all the good she does him and, God, what she must cost him he certainly doesn't need a wife. But he's got one, and she's played by Whitney Houston in another dull-eyed performance that is symptomatic of what's wrong with the movies in general.

Houston certainly will put fannies in seats she sings a lot, with each performance like a visit from another movie but casting someone in a motion picture because she looks good on the poster is a recipe for boredom, if not disaster.
