Aloe Holland, Ray Wlso, and hit tlstar, Linda, ara apprhended In thlr lab Thing." By WINNIE BONELLI Suff Writer Remember sitting In the balcony, munching popcorn and cheering "Mighty Joe Young?" Well, the younger generation has finally gotten its own version of a monster too lovable and humanlike to fear. His name Is "Swamp Thing," and he makes his debut today In 90 metropolitan movie houses. In a nutshell, co-producer Michael Uslan of Cedar-Grove faithfully adhered to the original comic story line.

His huge green monster superhero can't fly, see through walls, or magically disappear. Instead, the previously human Dr. Alec Holland has dedicated himself to help alleviate starving and suffering, which definitely goes against the grain of the sinister, greedy villain, played by Louis Jourdan. Compounding the suspense are deadly dungeons; a secret formula and a malicious midget, generously mixed with special makeup effects, eyecatching stunts, fast-paced adventure and one woman Adrienne Barbeau. The film's release was tentatively set for early June when this year's bumper crop of films flooded the market.

Several adventure thrillers have already bit the dust, destined for showing over cable television stations. Overnight, Embassy Pictures decided to fill the void with "Swamp Thing," leaving little time to generate a full-fledged advertising campaign. "I feel pretty confident about the film's opening since it has already been successfully showri in other parts of the country. We were even a bit surprised when we received nine national rave reviews in a row. It was almost like the pope had given his blessing to the project," said the co-producer, whose love of fantasy creatures dates back to the days when he worked his way through Indiana University i as a writer for DC Comics.

"There was an element of risk Involved because 'Swamp Thing' doesn't fit into the mold of a contemporary intense horror film. Instead, we took a gamble, turning back the pages of time to the 1940-SOs-type classics complete with rubber suit. Luckily, the audience took to It." While the movie was originally aimed at the 10-to-18-year-pld set, college students tend to consider the movie 'very campy," according to Uslan, as reflected in attendance figures in collegiate communities. mi mm mm "THEY DOMT BUILD MOVIES LIKE THIS VINCENT CANBT.
