Biymevme (Ark.) Courier News - Tuesday, March 21, 1967- Pagg Flvt U.S. ARMED FORCES-WHERE ARE THEY? Conners Eyeing Senate Seat? Spiritual Cartoons Coming By MIKE COCHRAN FORT WORTH, Tex. (AP) He's a dot named Jot, and the Southern Baptists are gambling tliat he'll touch the minds, hearts and personalities of millions of children. They've already plunged $200,000 into the spiritual pot, and that's only a starter. Jot is the key figure in a series of animated cartoons being produced in Fort Worth by the Southern Baptists' Radio-Television Commission. The five-minute color presentations are designed to carry nonsectarian messages, not necessarily Biblical to children ranging in age from 5 to 10, Based on Biblical principles, they draw moral or spiritual conclusions. The adventures of Jot are being offered free to television stations and are expected to make their first appearences in the fall. 'Hie Rev. Ed. Shipman, spokesman for the commission, said finances pose the only re- itriction. "We could be on 400 or 500 stations simultaneously," he said. "But we just don't have he money." * * * The commission estimates that the production, six years in the planning stage, will eventually cost between $100,000 and $150,000 annually. Each episode costs from $5,000 to $15,000. Ruth Byers, director of the Dallas Children's Theater, writes and produces the show, aided by a Dallas production firm. "This is a tremendously expensive venture, but one so significant we feel we had to go ahead, no matter what the cost," said the Rev. Mr. Ship- sings, runs and jumps and performs a wide variety of animated dutie, speaks with the voice of a small boy. "Jot represents the child personality most characteristic of the greater moral and spiritual community in America," the Rev. Mr. Shipman said. "His problems and experiences lead him to a realization of the importance of a right relationship with God, with himself and with his fellow man." The new approach was conceived several years ago by Dr. Paul M. Stevens, director of the I Radio-Tlevision Commission. By DORIS KLEIN HOLLYWOOD (AP) - ^ e t another actor — he-man Chuck Connors — is eyeing the kleig-lit . road io politics. He has .something to learn. Conners says 1964 Republican presidential nominee Sen. Barry Goldwater has suggested that he.run for the Senate from California next year. Goldwater says that's not quite what he said. "It's a great temptation," gaid Connors, who campaigned hard last year for fellow actor Ronald Reagan, California's new Republicn governor. "The only trouble is I don't think I can afford it," Connors said in what political observers might regard as an imperishable, impolitic statement. "I figure I've got to earn 000 a year for alimony, child support for my four sons, supporting my mother and my wife's mother and nephew before Kamala (his second wife) and I can eat. And a senator makes only about $36,000 a year." If Connors should run next year _ and win — California would have three actors, all Republicans, in its key political posts. In addition to Reagan, onetime song and dance man George Murphy is the state's into the affairs of another state. It was not a case of my saying, Yes, by all means, get in there and run." Connors a 6-foot-5 ex-first basema n for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and the old Los Angeles Angels, swung into the saddle in 1958 as star of the "Rifleman" television series. He later starred on televi- on as lawyer John Egan in junior senator. The state's senior senator, MALE OPERATORS are being used at the switchboards of General Telephone Company of California in an experimental program. Nineteen wale college students have been hired since Nov. I, working at hours suitable to their academic schedules. So far public reaction has been favorable, although many customers are startled when a man responds after they dial "operator." man. Jot is a white sprouts arms and dot which legs, Hies, "Arrest and Trial" and as ex- soldier Jason McCord in the 'Branded" series. Connors said he found in campaigning for Reagan that he had one strong factor in his favor if he decides to enter politics: "I have visibility. Politicians strive for years to acquire it — the ability to be recognized instantly by the public. My acting career has given me that." Connors, 44, calls himself a conservative Republican — "not the old-fasiiioned, turn-of-the- century kind, but a modern conservative." Connors said Goldwater suggested he try for the Senate las month during a conversation a the Tucson National Country Club. "I was in the foursome in ront of him and Arnold Pal mer," said Connors. "We've met' several times before and ve were talking about Ronnie's lection and politics in general when the senator said I should run for the Senate. I was flattered. I told him I didn't think it would be possible. He told me I might change my mind later Told of the statement, Goldwater said: "That's not exactly what took place. He told me people were asking him to run and that he iad not made up his mind. I told him that if he did run to make sure he was well financed and that he had the backing of enough people in the party.
