Low mileage, book value $7150. Asking $6500. 443-0169. By Bill Everhart Berkshire Eagle Staff Four days after losing standout outfielder Jeromy Burnitz to Class A St. Lucie of the Florida State League, the Pittsfield Mets bid farewell yesterday to ace southpaw Todd Douma, who was promoted all the way to Class AA Jackson of the Southern League.

"That's what we're here for, to help move them up," said Pitts-field manager Jim Eschen. "They both earned the chance." Jackson has lost two starting pitchers to injuries, and with both of the organization's full-season Class A teams shy of pitchers also, Douma earned the promotion. "He's very poised," said Eschen of Douma. "He's the kind of pitcher who could make that kind of jump and do well." Douma, who was drafted this June out of Arizona State, departed with a 5-4 record and a 2.14 ERA. He was third in the league in strikeouts with 84.

He had given up just one earned run in his last innings and finished off his career in Pittsfield with a 4-1 victory over Niagara Falls on Monday. Eschen was understandably thrilled with the Mets' recently concluded 6-1 road trip, which left them 10 games above .500, the highest they have been all season. In recent games, Pittsfield has dramatically cut down on the fundamental errors that dogged the team through June and July. "The kids have kept working hard, and now they're doing the little things," Eschen said. "They come to the ballpark ready, and they're learning what it takes to win." The Mets discovered on their return that the recent rains had helped return the infield to its previous green state.

The infield had been burned yellow while under the infield tarp during a heat wave. New York Mets special assignment scout Darrell Johnson, who managed the Boston Red Sox into the memorable 1975 World Series, is in town to "look at the Pittsfield Mets and try to match some of the names with the faces." Johnson said he still keeps tabs on the Red Sox, largely because he is a close friend of Boston general manager Lou Gorman, who was the Baltimore Orioles' farm director when Johnson managed Elmira, the Orioles' Eastern League affiliate, in 1966. "The only player still on the Red Sox from my time there is Dwight Evans," said Johnson. "I follow him and Carlton Fisk closely, and it's remarkable they have been able to play so well for so long." Johnson, of course, was in the Boston dugout when Fisk hit his famous home run, followed by his equally famous dance down the first-base line, to win the sixth game of the 1975 World Series. Johnson's visit to Wahconah Park yesterday was his first in 24 years.

His sharpest memory of the ballpark isn't a fond one. "Every time I came into the. visitors' clubhouse I'd walk right into this low concrete strip and put a lump in the middle of my forehead," he laughed. "I'd get talking and walk right into it, and I'd never remember it the next time we came in." Johnson wasn't the only returnee to Wahconah Park last night. St.

Catharines manager Doug Ault played for the Pittsfield Rangers in 1973 and part of 1974 before moving up the ladder. He belted 26 homers in his two Eastern League seasons. "I don't remember that big gap in right field," said Ault, who went on to play four seasons with the Texas Rangers and expansion Toronto Blue Jays. Ault said Mrs. Bernie Carmel, who housed him and another future major-leaguer, Roy Howell, when they came through Pittsfield, was planning on attending the game to renew acquaintances.

The Mets continue to lead the league in attendance with a total of 77,865 fans through 29 dates entering last night's game. That averages out to 2,685 fans per game, an average of 574 fans more per game than runner-up Elmira. SUBURU SEDAN, 1 986. $3,250. Worthington Air, 238-7786, 584-5510 SUBURU TURBO GL10, 1986.

With two out, Yorro reached on shortstop Buhe's error and took second on a wild pitch. Delgado followed with a line smash up the middle which sent Sciortino flying a la Charlie Brown and scored Yorro.

Delgado went to second on the throw home and scored on Carlton's single to left. Filter retired the side in order in the last of the ninth for his second save. The Blue Jays had jumped ahead in the first when Scott opened the game with a drag bunt single, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and raced in on Yorro's ground out. After scoring in the second inning on doubles by Alberto Castillo and Dunn, the Mets could do little with southpaw Taylor. Taylor, who threw mostly fastballs, fanned nine batters in 5 innings and struck out the side in the third and fifth innings.

Twelve Mets went down on strikes. "I was disappointed in our effort," assessed manager Jim Eschen. "After the way we've played the last two or three weeks I don't think we showed the spunk we should have. We made too many errors, we didn't put the ball in play with runners on third, and when you add up those two things it equals a big The good news for the Mets yesterday was the relief work of Fidler and Ken Coffee. Fidler, who has missed much of the month with a strained elbow, threw 2VS innings of shutout relief.

Coffee, who was signed by the Mets after an impressive showing with the Westerly, R.I., team in the regional National Baseball Congress tournament at Wahconah Park in July, set the side down in order in the sixth and seventh.
