"I guess I was pretty lucky to be drafted by Pittsburgh," said Lambert, recalling that he was the Steelers' second round draft choice in 1974. "We won two Super Bowls my first two years here and it got to the point where I was saying 'Geez, this team is supposed to win the Super Bowl all the time. When we didn't win it the next two years, let me tell you, it was tough." It certainly is no coincidence that the Steelers, who defeated Houston 27-13 in last Sunday's AFC championship, will be shooting for an unprecedented fourth NFL championship in the six years Lambert has been with the team.

Leading tackier The 27-year-old Lambert, 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, has been the leading tackier for the Steelers in each of his six seasons, recording 119 tackles with 46 assists in 1979. The menacing middle linebacker also intercepted six passes a league high for linebackers and a personal high for Lambert. "That's great," said Pittsburgh Coach Chuck Noll, after NEW YORK (UPI) Jack Lambert, that wild and crazy linebacker of the Super Bowl-bound Pittsburgh Stealers who led the team in tackles for the sixth consecutive season, was named yesterday as UPI's AFC Defensive Player of the Year. Lambert, known for defensive leadership as well as his bone-crunching tackles, received 18 DiNicola wins top pin prize in tourney Merc DiNicola of Moldmaster Engineers was the winner of the top prize in the annual Berkshire County Candlepin Pro League handicap tournament last week. He had a 418 three-string total, rolling a 409 scratch score coupled with his nine-pin handicap, Phil Heidel of Coach Lite Restaurant was second with a 415 total on a 388 scratch score and a 27-pin handicap.

Heidel had the best scratch single of the tourney with a 165. Bobby Ireland of Imperial was third with a 412 scratch score followed by Sil Mastrodicasa with 386-25-411 and Al Litano with 350-5-400. The high single prize was won by George Wojtkowski of Dairy Center with a 140 and Pete Stra-cuzzi was second with 133. learning of Lambert's award. "Jack is kind of the heart of our defense.

He calls all our signals on the field. He's a controlled leader and he has played excellent football this year. He deserves the award." The fact that Lambert, named to the All-Pro team along with nine of his teammates, played the second half of the season with a partially separated shoulder is a credit to his "all out at any costs" attitude. Although the Steelers suffered injuries to linebackers Loren Toews and Jack Ham and safety Mike Wagner during the year, Lambert was the key ingredient In keeping the Pittsburgh defense solid. The Steelers finished first in total defense allowing Just 266.9 yards per game fourth against the rush and fourth against the pass.

After being brought up on winning Super Bowls, Lambert feels his team should never lose even during the regular season. Asked if he felt the regular season was a success, Lambert shot back, "We should have beaten Houston on Monday night (referring to a controversial 20-17 loss in the regular season finale). We went down there with a chance to sew up the title and -get the home field for both playoff games (San Diego's loss to Houston gave Pittsburgh the home-field against the Oilers)." Officials M.
