at the school. Wellesley's Lia Galanis in the final. Foss, ranked No. 2 in the country in singles, is 59-5 in her three years at Williams. She and Newhall, a sophomore from Great Falls, Mont, went 11-2 last fall and are ranked No.

10 nationally. They are the first Williams doubles team to reach the nationals, an honor they achieved last week by winning the New England Showcase Tournament at MIT, where they upset the top-seeded Wellesley team of Galanis and Tina Sook. That, however, was one of only two matches this spring for Foss and Newhall, who have had to prepare for the nationals by running, working in the weight room and practicing against teammates, members of the Williams men's team and Mary Dailey, a friend of Ramsay's who is a former pro and All-America from the University of Miami. "We're ready, at least physically we are," Foss said of her preparation after a mostly noncompetitive spring. "If it hurts you anywhere, it's psychologically." "The big thing is," Newhall insisted, "if you go out there with the desire to win, you can pull it off." Both players took a break from tennis in the winter.

Foss, a double major in art history and psychology, played for Ramsay's squash team, while Newhall, a double major in biology and pre-med, played ice hockey: "We came out of the winter hungry," Foss said. "I'd say we might be hungrier than those who play 360 days a year. One thing is sure there's no burnout for us." TENNIS, from CI and spring, the NESCAC schools play women's tennis in the fall and men's tennis in the spring, largely to help diwy up use of limited court space. That system works fine unless you're a woman who sets her sights on the NCAA championships, which are held in the spring. Such is the plight of Foss, an All-America singles player, and her doubles partner Newhall.

They will spend the next three days battling in the NCAA championships in Kalamazoo against the top Division 3 players in the country, most of whom have been competing throughout the spring. Foss figures to be among the four seeds in the 16-player singles draw, while the team probably won't be seeded in the 32-team doubles draw. "They're going into this at a tremendous disadvantage," said Williams coach Gail Ramsay, a finalist for Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association Coach of the Year, who will accompany her players to the nationals. This is nothing new for Foss, a junior from Cape Neddick, Maine, who followed the same path to the nationals last year in Atlanta. She lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Karyn Cooper of Wellesley, but not before earning All-America status by reaching the final eight in singles.

Foss also earned notoriety last fall, when she won the Rolex National Small College Division 3 tournament in Corpus Christi, Texas, upsetting the top seed in the semifinals and defeating St. Joe 17Vfe, McCann Vz CLARKSBURG Co-captains Dan Kearns and Tony Tullock shared medalist honors With 7-over-par 43 as the Crusaders rolled to an easy victory.
