DENMARK RUMPH, Attorneys ot Low 66 West Street Pittsfield, MA 01201 (413) 499-4501 April 21, 1992 AGAWAM (AP) A 24-year-old store clerk whose body was left in the woods died of a stab wound in the throat, police said yesterday. 'A passer-by discovered the body Sunday off a road about 2 miles from the store where the victim worked. The clerk, Lisa Ziegert, vanished from that card and gift shop four days before while working alone on an evening shift Lt Robert Campbell, of Ag-aWam town police, said yesterday that autopsy reports indicated the victim was killed by the knife wound in her throat Thought to be abduction Authorities said earlier they were treating the disappearance as an abduction. Campbell refused yesterday to comment on any clues inside the store, whether a murder weapon was found, or whether police had any suspects.

The body was found shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday behind an industrial park in Agawam, a Springfield suburb of 27,500 on the Connecticut border. Authorities worked with spotlights late into the night to collect evidence at the scene. Ziegert was last seen alive Wednesday night at her part-time job at Brittany's, the card shop in a small shopping plaza off Route 147. Police said she spoke with the owner of an adjacent carpet store about 7:35 p.m.

and a shop customer at 8:20 p.m. About 9:05 p.m., another customer found the store open but empty, and left without notifying authorities. The next morning, store personnel found the shop's lights on, Ziegert's coat and shoes under the counter, and her car in the parking lot Over the next few days, police used helicopters and trained dogs to search the area. Town residents have reacted to the death with a wave of sympathy for the victim's family and worries about their own safety. During an Easter Sunday service at Ziegert's church, parishioners prayed for her safe return.

Ziegert, who had worked for Brittany's since 1989, was also employed as a teacher's aide at a local middle school.
