VfcH Chentba MM of Their Rights and Black Ami Happy in a Wealth of Greenbacks and Turkeys, Coral Necklaces and Hams The Concert Ball Managers Run Away. Messrs.

Meade and Lowell, managers of the lato baby show in Concert Hall, having advertised that at noon yesterday they would in that place distribute the prizes promised to the fortunate mothers, a crowd of curious persons, who evidently suspected that all would not be light, had assembled on the street in front of the hall some time before mid day. Neither of the managers nor any one of their assistants was to be seen within or without the building, and the door was guarded by the regular janitor, who admitted none but mothers of babies that had been on exhibition. His work was easy, however, for not more than a dozen women entered the hall, as the announcement of the lucky numbers had previously been "made public. The mothers, each carrying the prettiest and in every respect the most meritorious infant in'America, were received in the hall by Mr. Lombard, the lessee, who informed them that neither Mr.

Meade nor any of his men were to be present, but that Mr. Meade had instructed him to say to any mothers or guardians who might come to witness the expected distribution that a proper settlement had been made between tho managers and all those entitled to prizes. "If that's the ease," added Mr. Lombard, "you may all go home tho performance is ended." "But it's not," indignantly exclaimed tho mother of "No. 31, Eva Evans, the prettiest baby nnder twelve months." They haven't settled with me." Nor with me," said the proud parent of Nos.

8 and 9, Pearla Nathans Goldsmith and Philip Nathans Goldsmith, respectively tho prettiest baby under two years" and "a baby in the prettiest group." Nor with me," angrily chimed in the doting mamma of "No. 278, a charming little girl, the prettiest baby under three years." RUMBLINGS OP WAB. "Well! anymore?" asked Mr. Lombard, as the perspiration began to ooze from his brow, for he suspected that he bad been left to bear the consequences of somo wrong doiug. But the other mothors had apparently only come to join generally in the din.

For a time everybody seemed at a loss to explain the absence of the seven others who were entitled to prizes. Mrs. VVigley, who has brought into the world No. 278, however, threw light on the question. "On last Tuesday night," she said, a stoutly built, rather low size man, with light hair and moustache, came to my house, No.

1001 Naylor street, and having introduced himself as Mr. G. Parry, of Chicago, made to mo this proposition Mr. Meade is busted up got no money and has cleared out of town. I'm an intimate friend of his, and would like to effect an amicable settlement between hira and yourself, even at my own loss.

Now, you may bo entitled to a prize, and you may not, but I'm willing to risk giving you five dollars cash down for your chance, and should yon draw one I promise you fifteen dollars I accepted the five dollars, and gave him a receipt upon theconditions mentioned. Seeing my number published by The Times yesterday morning in the prize list, I sent my husband in the eveuing to get the fifteen dollars from Mr. Meade, who was then stopping at the Continental Hotel. Mr. Meade assured him that I should get my rights at noon to day." Yes," said one of the young women who had modestly set herself up for the prize that was to be given the handsomest mother, "that Tarry's the chap that has the name of being the husband of Mile.

Lenntine, the variety actress, who, although hero with her baby only two days, and was absent every evening at the theatre, got tho '5250 lady's gold hunting ease watch' that had been offered to tho handsomest mother." A CONCERT FOB THE MAMMAS. The mothers of Nos. 8 aud 31 donied that anybody bad asked for their chances at a discount, whereupon it was concluded that the winning mothers who were abseut had been bought," while others had been substituted, by mistake or otherwise, for Nos. 8 and 31. After devoting an hour aud a half or more to expressing their dissatisfaction, the mothers were sent home in comparatively good spirits by Mr.

Lombard, who oirered them the free use of the hull on next Saturday evening for the purpose of holding a concert for the benefit of all the women who had had children on exhibition. He thought that he would bo able to get artists for the occasion who would perform without pay, in which event, while having nothing to lose, the women would have good prospects of getting out of the proceeds at least as much as they had spent for ear faro and other matters incidental to their attendance at tho show. A committee of mothers started to work upon the idea yesterday, and the concert will take place tomorrow night. The proper settlement" referred to by Mr. Meade as having been made was arranged in tho following way; Mr.

Meade found, according to his own statement, that, owing to lack of patronage and other causes, he would lose by the show about if the prizes should bo given as promised. In order to easo himself a little be caused the ballots to bo counted on last Tuesday evening, and having ascertained the numbers entitled to premiums, formed an understanding with Mr. G. Parry, according to which the latter was to purchase, as cheaply as possible, the chances of the mothers holding tho.se numbers and to be reimbursed for his expenditures by Mr. Meade.

Mr. Parry, who was unknown to most of tho mothers, was, of course, to represent himself as having no interest in the concern except that of an outside speculator. On the same night Mr. Parry carried out the scheme, making to each mother a proposition similar to that which was accepted from him by Airs. Wigley.

BUYING UP THE CHANCES. Each of the mothcrs.exccpt Mllo. him a receipt for something which he delivered to her in payment for her chance. No. 45 accepted $02.50 in cash for hors No.

95 a gold hunting case watch, said to bo worth $35, but which the recipient would sell for, perhaps, No. 3H, a lady's "gold" hunting case watch worth $50 in cash, aud Mr. Meade's note for 550 more No. 103, 50 in cash a party claiming to bo the genuine No. 8, Mrs.

Thomas, 50 in cash a woman declaring that uo truo No. 9 but herself oxisted, Mrs. J. L. Murray, $60 iu cash a claimant of No.

31, who was not tho mother of Eva Evans, "the prettiest baby under twelve years," M0; No. 25, 50 in cash, and No. 278, Mrs. Wigley, to in cash aud Mr. Parry's alleged broken promise for $15 more.

Mile. Ijeontine received tho "$250 lady's gold hunting case watch," unshaven. All these receipts were shown TllK Times reporter yesterday by a friend of Mr. Parry, who, in explanation of the dispute shout Nos. 8, 9 aud 31, said he understood that the origiual holders of those numbers took their babies from the show at an early period of its existence, and their places were supplied by But the veracity of this statement was brought into question by the mothers Nos.

8, 9 and 31, who asserted that they had regulurly attended the show throughout. On Wednesday afternoon Mr. Mcado told Mr. Lombard all about the buying up of the chances, and requested him to receive the women yesterday as ho did. At midnight Mr.

Meade, having paid bis hotel bill, left by the midnight train for Now York. His partner, Mr. Lowell, had been out of the city for several days previous. They still owe Mr. Lombard the rent for all this Week, and a balance of 50 from last week's rent.

HAPPY PICKANINNIES. Satisfactory Awards Mario By the Management of the Museum Daby Mhow. The nervous gentleman who had been assigned the task of distributing prizes among the successful competitors at the Museum colored baby how, made his toilet yesterday morning in a peculiarly ferocious manner. Ho adopted the costume of Dick Shaw, the Fiend," curled the ends of bia moustache until they touched the tips of his cars, and mimlcing the glare of a professional murderer strode up to the theatre at Ninth and Arch. Ten o'clock was the hour for giving out the first award, but as early as eight a crowd of colored matrons, flanked by meek looking husbands and sires, besieged the en traucc way and grcotod the nervous gentleman as he tried to slip past them into the office, through achorusof Mornln', Boss, how de do?"
