He added that th police chief retirement issue is "somewhat of a family matter. The mayor (Robert Decker) is supporting Lepes.

However, the outlook is not so bright when plans for a regional school are discussed. The Borough Council sees a savings in joining forces with 32.6-square-mile Hardyston which hosts the home of the Gingerbread Castel, a youngster's fairyland. Councilman Christopher Fitzpatrick said "It would be cheaper for us to merge with another town (for police protection). On its own, the borough could have, at most, a five-man police department.

This would' not provide a good, full-time department." A study showed it would cost between $100,000 to $120,000 for the borough to hire a police chief, three officers, part-time specials and a dispatcher-secretary. Joining with Hardyston, the price would drop to $77,000 by adding two partolmen and a dispatcher-secretary to the Hardyston staff. Hamburg now spends $42,000 for a recently established full-time police department of three officers and no chief (and that's another tale). Two of the patrolmen's salaries however are paid with Comprehensive Employment Training Act (CETA)funds, and the dispatcher service is contracted through Hardyston. Hardyston Mayor Rolf Sorensen said all that is needed for a regional law enforcement unit between the two Sussex County neighbors is "another couple of men, a patrol car and a dispatcher." Hamburg Councilman George Kabash agrees.
