Mr. Samtt el Comstock Betts an old and respectable citizen, (for many years the oldest man living in that town) the 91st year of his age. He has left a numerous circle of relatives and friends to lament his departure, although he continued with tnem to a good old age. He was a member of the Convention which framed our State Constitution, and a member of the Convention which adopted our National Constitution. During our revolutionary struggle he was an ardent Whig and continued firmly attached, until the time of his death, to the jliberal, just, and glo.

ious principles then established in our happy, enlightened, and prosperous country. His surviving children are 6 in number, his grand children 32 great grand children 36. He lost, prev ious to his death, 5 children. At New-Itbanon, on Wednesday of last week, Vlrs. Churchill, consort of Rev.

By her. bereaved husband and children, the oss of such a wife and mother must be long and severely felt nor will the church and congregation, with which she was connected, soon forget her unobtrusive irtues, or the interest which she so steadi-manifested, for thfir prosperity.

After passing an order for the supply of newspaper to the members and the appointment of the usual committees on the Rules and Orders, and seat big the members; and a joint committee to inform the Executive that the two Houses were ready to attend public worship, the Senate adjourned to attend divine worship. In the Haute of Representatives were present 268 raembeis, being nearly the whole number elect d. Hon. Mr. Welles, of Boston, as senior member, took the chair and called the House to order, when, It having been previously ascertained that a quorum was present, a committee was appomted to wait upon the Executive and inform him and the Hon.

Council that a quorum of the House were conven ed and ready to he duly qualified. To this messag his F.xeellency returned for answer that immediate )y after administering the usual oaths to the mein bers of the Senate, he would atttend the House foi 'the tike purpose. The oaths of office having been administered to the members by the Executive, the House then pro ceeded to the election of a Clerk. The votes hav ing been collected and counted it appeared that the whole number was 259, of which 257 were for Pel La W. Warren, and 2 scattered votes.

The Clerk having been qualified by taking the customary oath and having signified that the next business In course was the election of a Speaker, a committee was appointed to receive and count the vote, who reported the whole number of ballots toj be necessary lo a choice 135 Wm. C. Jarvis, ri Pittsfield, bad 152, Wm. Prescott, of Boston, had 90, Hercules Cushman, of Freetown, 23. and there were three scattered votes.

The report of the committee having been read by the Clerk, he declared William C. Jarvis elected Speaker. Mr. Jarvis then rose in hia seat and addressed the House, thanking them for the honor conferred upon him, and intimating his readiness to discharge the duties of the office to the best of his ability, requesting at the same the indulgence of the House in tne perform: ance of his new duty. Mr.

J. was then attended to the Chair by the Hon. Mr. Welles, Votet or Governor and Lieutenant Governor. The Hon.

Messrs. Tufts, Keys, I -Strong, (of S. II.) and Parrott Messrs. Cuvhman, Knowles, Sullivan, Whiting, Rutter, and Turner, were ap pointed to examine the returns of the votes for Governor and Lieutenant Governor, and to report thereon. The Supreme Executive, and the Members of the two Houses, then wentiu procession to the Old South Meeting House, escorted by the Independent Cadets, commanded by Lt.

That they found the whole number of votes tor Governor returned agreeably to the provisions of the Constitution, to" have been 65,330 ot which were necessary to make a choice, and that the Hon. WILLIAM EUSTIS had, 34,402, and a chosen That the whole number of votes for Lieutenant-a Governor, were 65,015 of which 32,508 were necessary to make a choice, and that the Hou.

Dearborn, and also of a committee, praying to be incorporated as the Bunker Hill Monument Aaociation for the purpose of collecting funds for the erection of a Moiument on Bunker Hill in commemoration ol the event of the Revolution, was committed to Messrs. Tudor, of B. Harr of C. and Thayer of B. with such as the Hon.

were appointed Monitors. The Hon. Mr. Leland came in with a message from the Hon. Senate, informing the House that in consequence of the death of the Hon.

John Phillips, one of their Members, the Board had adjourned to 9 o'clock tomorrow morning, On motion, ordered, that in respect to the memory of the late H011. John Phillips, this House do now adjourn. Friday, may 30. The Committee appointed to wait upon the Governor and Lieutenant-Governor elect, to notify them of their election, reported, that they would attend a Convei tiou of the two Houses, this day, at 12 oclock, for the purpose of being qualified. Rutter, of E. S. Lyman, of B. Valentine, of Hopkinton, Knox, of B. and Barker, of A were appointed to report on the expediency of revising the several Militia Laws now in force, with leave to report bv bill, or otherwise.

Committee on Contetted El- Messrs. Tur ner, of Scituale, William Ellis, of 'Dedham, Fiske, of Cheshire, Hedge, of Plymouth and Rantoul, Beverly. Messrs. Prescott and Sullivan, of Boston, appeared, were qualified, and took thrir seats. Messrs.

'Turner; of S. Williams, ol N. B. anc Ropes, of S. were appointed a committee to consider what compensation shall be allowed the Members of the General Court the present session.

A remonstrance of Levi Dickinson, and others, oi Hadley, against the proceedings of that town in the choice of a Representative, and praying that the seat of one of the Members may be vacated, was read, and referred to the Committee on Contested Elections. The Committee on the subject, reported Rules and Orders for the government of the House, which were adopted, ordered to be observed, ajid printed. CONVENTION OF THE TWO HOUSES. The two Houses met in Convention agreeably to assignment, to fill the vacancy in the Senate Board in the District of Bristol, See. when the Hon.

IN CONVENTION. Tle two Houses assembled in Convention, agreeably to assignment, at 12 o'clock, for the purpose of administering the oaths of office to the Governor and Lieutenant Gov ernor elect 1 Soon after, the Hon. WILLIAM EUSTIS, and the Hon. LEVl LINCOLN, came in, attended by the Secretary of the Commonwealth, and the Sheriff of Suffolk, and having signified their acceptance of the offices to which they were elected, the oaths of office were administered to them by the Hon. Mr.

Silsbee, President of the Senate. The Secretary of the Commonwealth then made the usual Proclamations, when His Excellency the Governor, and His Honor the Lieutenant, with their attendants, retired. 'The Convention then separated We learn, that after His Excellency the Gov ernor had taken the oaths of office, he repaired to the Council Chamber, where he was received by Governor Brooks, introduced to the Members of the Council, and to the Executive chair. Governor Brooks then took his leave, and retires to private life. A petition of the City Council of Boston, praying certain amendments in the charter of the city was read, and committed to Messrs.
