The Berkshire Evening Eagle Friday, April 21, IStff. Page Nineteen The Berkshire Garden Center Stray, Univanted Animals Will Be Protected by SPCA By A. KENNETH SIMTSON Horticultural Dirttor Among the newer annual which have been donated to the Center THE HEW HAVEN R. R. fflTRODUCfS STREAMLINED an early date.

If Sweet Peas have Men started early in poA inside they should now be gradually hardened off in preparation for planting. Of course a coldframe Is ideal for hardening off plants, but if one is not available, the plants can be carried out of doors during the day and left out nights when there is no danger of frosts. Perhapa a box can be rigged up which can be covered during cold nights to harden the peas off in not see It growing at the" Center perhaps a brief description would be appreciated. Although this plant is listed both as an annual and as a half hardy perennial, for the Berkshire gardeners Its use will probably be entirely as an annual. The plant is for trial this year are the seeds educate animal owners to the need for greater protection of their charges.

Late summer and early fall always find many small animals deserted at the shore, the country and in sur-mer colonies not hardy, but It will stand con 10 days or two weeks. If the ipeas are gradually hardened off siderable frost in the fall witnou; damaging the foliage or flowers. At the Center last year this Dwarf Cup Flower was started from seed Inside in February and residents are urged by T. King Haswell, local SPCA agent, to co-operate In protecting animal life in Berkshire County. The animal shelter in Pittsfield has facilities for caring for stray and unwanted animals, and anyone who finds a stray dog or cat, or who wishes to dispose of animals, is asked to communicate with Mr.

Haswell. One of the most discouraging features of animal relief work is the abandonment of animals, which are left by the roadside or elsewhere to shift for themselves. The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is making a determined effort this spring to habit. plant has been recommended for both edgings and for rock garden plantings. Last season while on trial at the Center, it was grown for both of these purposes.

Under conditions as experienced In the trials, best results were obtained when it was used in a rock planting. Here the soil was rather light and infertile, never having received fertilizer of any kind. However, this seemed to be Just the conditions und which the plant was happiest. The spreading plants were literally covered with blossoms throughout most of the season. Those which were grown in a demonstration of edging plants were grown in trial plots considerably richer, and consequently the growth was taller and more rank and had a tendency to lop down.

The appearance of these plans was not as uniform and the bloom was considerably less. Random Notes Berkshire gardeners who last year planted the famous and much advertised Russell Lupins have had much discussion about the hardiness of these plants which originated in England. The next two weeks should tell the story. A careful inspection of the few plants because of the comparatively slow of a new plant called Nolana Blue Ensign. The parent species of this plant are found growing wild in Chile where it is called the Chilean Bell Flower.

I find that there are several species. Blue Ensign, the new variety, was developed from Nolana Lanceolata. Although I have not yet seen this plant In flower it would appear from descriptions suited almost entirely for rock garden areas and for pot plants. The dwarf spreading plants reach a height of only a foot, while the flowers In shape resemble those of the Ipomoea or Blue Morning Glory although they are much smaller In size, while the blue flowers have a white center. I am sure that those gardeners generally by owners who "cannot be bothered" to take the little creatures home.

This practice of abandoning animals is cruel and unnecessary, according to Dr. Francis H. Rowley, president of the MSPCA, who states that the society's agents are always glad to come to the rescue of unwanted animals if they are requested to do so. The animals will be cared for at the Pittsfield shelter, and suitable homes found for those which are desirable. EVERY SUNDAY tO growth while in the seedling stage it is quite apparent that it must be started early to give satisfactory bloom.

Also cuttings may be taken from plants taken up in the fall. From the seeds' started in February, the first bloom appeared about July 1. From this time until late in the fall after the first frosts, the dwarf spreading plants which reach a height of about five inches bloomed continuously and profusely. they will stand considerable frost after being planted into the open ground. When cultivating the garden early in the season, be careful not to cut the shoot of late starting plants, particularly lilies.

Plant trees and shrubs aa soon as the ground is workable. Mice caused considerable damage last winter If hedges or shrubs have been badly damaged they should be severely pruned back to encourage new bottom growth. An application of a complete fertilizer should help to stimulate growth. Dwarf Cup Flower While on the subject of annual plants which may be used in the rock garden, I am reminded of Dwarf Cup Flower (Nierembergia Hippomanlco).

I have mentioned this plant before which was on trial at the Center for the first time last year. However, I see that many seed catalogues are listing seeds again this spring as a novelty, and so for those who did Plants which have been carried over the winter in cold frames Nierembergias are allied to the Petunia to which the flowers bear a similarity, while the foliage is quite different, being gray green in color, small and narrow and quite inconspicuous once the plant has started to flower. The blosoms which might be described as somewhat petunia like but not as deeply Tunneled, are a pleasing lavender-blue shade, enlightened somewhat by a touch of yellow in the center.
