The sixth was when Lawrence put a scare into Lakeland, reaching Bauman for three runs on three hits. But Bauman stranded a man at third and that proved to be the difference. That and Lakeland making its daramtic double-play. It was a fitting end to the Lan cers' best season ever. They ended with a 25-3 record.

"Yeah, I was nervous, scared to death," said Bauman after the game. "We do make it nervous, we gotta keep everybody here," smiled Shutte. "What a great bunch of kids. They do want they have to da to win." Amen. most got a bitter dose of its own medicine at a most inopportune time, here Saturday at the Mejcer County Park.

They were talking like champs and, Indeed, they had the right to. After all, the Skyline Conference champs had knocked Lawrence ace Kirk Louaer-back out of the box in the fifth inning. Lakeland beat Lawrence, 5-4, but not until the Cardinals had scored three times in the sixth and had a potential seventh inning rally ended by a dramatic and climactic 6-4-3 double-play. It was Lakeland's third straight one-run victory in state play.

The Lancers have been using the double-play to get out of jams all year and it was fitting that they ended their biggest game with one. Sophomore hurdler Wayne Bauman went all the way for his eighth win against one loss. He took a one-run lead into the final inning and had to face Lawrence's two' three and four hitters. Bauman got Mike Carroll on a grounder to shortstop Bo Houser for the first out, but Tom Marince brought the Cardinal fans and bench to life and drove dread into the hearts of Lakelwd rooters with an ominous bloop single to right field. That brought up Lawrence's imposing clean-up hitter Paul O'Neil.

O'Neil, built like a small truck, had driven a Bauman "pitch deep to right to end a Cardinal threat earlier in the game. But on Bauman's second pitch, O'Neil's power was misdirected. He hit the ball hard but it was a sharp grounder to Houser at short. It was labeled "double-play" and Houser knew it. "Heck yes, I knew it was two," said the senior Lancer star who is headed for West Point.

Houser flipped the ball to second baseman Mike Capozzi, a junior, for the first out and Capozzi made his biggest pivot of the year and rifled the ball to senior Rick Foy for the game-ending out that triggered a mob scene. Tossing their hats high into the air; the joyous Lancers formed a human mound of triumph near second base and ecstatic Lakeland fans released their tension with chants of "We're No. as they streamed onto the field to slap the backs of their he-ros. The dramatic finish was in sharp contrast to the mood on the Lakeland bench as early as the fifth inning. The Lancers were loose, confident (nearly cocky) and Pts.

Paterson 0 4 .000 3 8 .273 ning streak. He appeared supremely confident that he would extend both streaks.

But Lakeland quickly knocked some of that cockiness out of the senior ace. The first two Lancers (Bauman and Capozzi) reached base on a walk and Louderback's mishandling of Capozzi's bunt. He bore down to get the next two outs with no advance, but Bob Ricker foiled Louder-back with a lined triple to righj-centerfield that scored both runs. Aided by Bob Bender's error on Dan Bannister's single, Lawrence came back for one run in the second. Bannister singled to right with two outs and continued to second on rightfielder Bender's bobble.

He scored on Mike Russo's ground single to left. Lakeland came back with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth inning to chase Louderback. Ricker started the fourth inning rally with a leg hit. After two outs, Bob Rokoszak blooped a single down the leftfield line, scoring Ricker. Rokoszak took second on the throw and scored on Bender's single to right.

Bruce Gordon's punched single to centerfield scored Bob Evangelista from second in the fifth with what proved to be the winning run but the inning was climaxed by a play that seemed to turn the tide. Ricker, who had avoided a tag to reach third on Gordon's single, apparently scored Lakeland's sixth run on Foy's liner to center. But he was ruled out after an appeal that he left third too soon.
