DECEM BR 17, 1907 TWO CENTS The Evening Gazette is Santa Claus' Official Organ Read His Announcements HARD PROBLEM: CONFRONTS INDIANA State Health Department Insists Sewage on a Disposal Plant. PLANS ALREADY ADOPTED A Bond Issue Will be Necessary to Provide Funds for the Improvement.

IT IS NOW UP TO THE VOTERS Indiana faces a serious problem in the matter of the disposal of the age. At present the contents of the sewers are simply allowed to flow over the field owned by the borough near Reed station whence it makes its way into Stony Run, a tributary of Twolick creek. Stony Run traverses a number of farms between the sewer outlet and the creek, the owners of which last summer complained to the State Board of Health that the pollution of the stream by the sewage had resulted in a nuisance. Some of them are dairymen, and they alleged that the buyers of their milk, fearing contamination, bad refused to buy or threatened to quit baying milk from them. A representative of the State Board came to Indians and thorougbly went over the situation.

His subsequent report to the Board was to the effect that the situation was bad and that' Indiana borough should be compelled! to purify the eMent of its sewers before allowing it to enter Stony Run. The Board thereupon denied the bor-! ough the privilege of making additional sewerage connections and gave tice that plans for a system of purif-1 cation must be submitted ic the Board. This matter was at once taken op and the Borough Engineer bas been at work formulating plans and' designing sach a plant se would meet, with the approval of the State autborities. It was a big task, as the matter of sewage purification is still in its in- I fancy in this country and there is not much in the way of established practice to guide one. The systems decided apon by Columbus, and Washington, York and Wayne, in this state, as well as some successful systems in England, were studied, with the recult that Engineer Mullen bas adopted the most efficient and most economical, features of the plants mentioned and has embodied them in bis plars icr a system for Icciana.

At Monday night's meeticg he EXbibited the drawinge, with 8 larze amouct of technical and explanatory notes. Cornell after a prolonged stady of the situation acopted tre plans, and directed toat they be submitted to the State Board. The part in the problem which present itself we forte -9 taxpayers of the trough, is the expease ch necessarily will re. v. ed.

The people will be asked to approve an issue of Sewerage: Bonds in the amount of about $30,000. Should the voters appear, the bonds will be offered to secure the necessary fande. Sbould the voters not authorise the issue, Council cannot eater upon the work of erecting the sewage displant, and the matter at issue will be up to the people and the state health authorities. The latter might thee forbid the 0663 use of sewers, would doubtless in the prosecation of aDy suite for damages whico might be brought! against the borough. 00 It is a momentous problem but one which most be met at as early day! as possible, for present conditions are being allowed by the tolerance of State Department of Health.
