In their efforts to devise a plan by which it will be possible to induce Colonel A. L. This would involve the retirement of S.

Others of them pcint out this fact, however: that if Colonel Hawkins gets Washington county's indorsement this time and the district nomination, it is improbable that he chould succeed himself. And for this reason Congressman Acheson has had the nomination in Washington county for five successive times. The first time he sought the Su. Mo. Tu.

This disposal of the report as to the result of Mr. Huff's efforts to proclaim Colonel Hawkins a candidate leaves nothing but the unsupported prediction of Quay lieutenants that Hawkins will declare himself out of the race and support the candidacy of his lieutenant colonel. Messrs. Durham, Elkin, Andrews and other Quayites anxious to see Barnett nominated profess to have no doubt that the latter can have the nomination if he wants it. General doubt remains on the question, however, and is district nomination he was defeated.

Hawkins' friends in Washington county do not want him to become a candidate for state treasurer for the reason that in doing so he would be making himself the tool of Congress man Acheson, and would gain the ill will of the Quayities, upon whom he would have to depend for his election. The Quayities are counting a good deal upon this situation to accomplish their purpose.

At the same time it is generally admitted that if there is to be a hard fight between the Republican and Democratic parties for state treasurer Hawkins would be preferable as a candidate because he is better known throughout the state than Barnett. The latter is regarded as very agreeable socially and possessed of considerable ability. He is not well known, however, and his advantage as a soldier candidate is somewhat limited in consequence. The frequent howling against the barbarities of the Filippinos, sinks into insignificance, when we are called to witness an infamous crime as that of lynching five human beings by peaceful and law abiding Why have courts of justice, when the lynch law reigns supreme? To wash such a blood stain from the starry flag of the free it will take centuries. Many a time we have read in the American newspapers of the metropolis, of murders committed by Italians, and have noticed with disgust, that the crimes were related under such glowing headlines as "Another Italian Murder" or "The Italian Vendetta." or "The Italian Stiletto," or "A Victim of the Mafia!" Now, is it fair, we ask, to the illustrious contemporaries to use only for our nationality such fiery captions?
