Nobody can remember the last time a Notre Dame team was such a big underdog. Coach Lou Iloltz doesn't think the Irish should be taken so lightly. Third-ranked Michigan is favored by nearly 10 points for todays game (WNEP-TV, Channel 16 at noon) against No. 11 Notre Dame (1-0) in the 400th game played in Michigan Stadium. The reason is that the Irish struggled last week to defeat Northwestern 27-12 at home, while the Wolverines trounced Washington State 41-14.

There isnt anything wrong with winning ugly, Holtz said. I dont mind being ugly, as long as its successful." If the Irish hope to win today, they'll have to play better than they did a week ago. Holtz thinks they will. I dont think you can correct in four days (of practice this week) what you couldnt correct in 44, Holtz said. But nothings ever as bad as it seems or as good as it seems.

Well play very well. But it may not be good enough to beat Michigan. Kevin McDougal will start at quarterback again. But Holtz said Paul Failla also will play, as he did against Northwestern. Between them, they completed 9 of-11 passes for 146 yards against the Wildcats.

There were no interceptions, but no touchdowns, either. I have confidence in Kevin McDougal, Holtz said. His problem has been that we havent been able to run the ball. Weve got to give him a better chance. But I dont know if we can do that against a team like Michigan The Irish ran for only 162 yards against Northwestern That ws an uncharacteristically low number for the Irish.

Each of the past six years, Notre Dames rushing attack has ranked 14th or better nationally. The Irish averaged 250 3 or more yards and scored at least 30 touchdowns on the ground. Michigans veteran defense held Washington State to 82 yards rushing hn I think the pressure to improve the running game is on the offensive iMine, Holtz said But its also on the backs. What you need is continuity. You have to be able to throw the ball, too.

Michigans offense rushed for 179 of its 453 yards in the opener. Against Washington State, tailback Tyrone Wheatley carried 15 times for 117 yards, including a 59-yard TD. Todd Collins, spreading his passes to eight receivers, completed 19 of 29 for 265 yards and three touchdowns Mercury Hayes had eight catches for 105 yards. "I think we rushed the passer well, Holtz said But Michigan does some different things Michigan can protect him. We wont go into this game saying, Weve got to pressure him.

Bobby Labonte, continuing to show improvement in his rookie yeaf on the Winston Cup circuit, stole some of Mark Martins thunder Friday by winning the pole for the Miller Genuine Draft 400. Labontes fast lap of 122 006 mph at Richmond International Raceway meams tonights race will be the third straight in which he will start fourth or better.

It was the first pole on stock car racing's top series for the 29-year-old Labonte, the 1991 Grand National champion and the younger brother of former Winston Cup champion Terry Labonte. We knew wed be pretty -good, but we didnt realize wed be on the pole, said Labonte, who is 19th in the driver standings and had his best finish, a seventh at Watkins Glen, N.Y., last month. Ernie Irvan, in just his second race since joining the team of the late Davey Allison, will start on the outside of the front row, also in a Ford Thunderbird. Irvans best lap on Richmonds D-shaped layout was 121.770. Rusty Wallace, Darrell Waltrip and Harry Gant rounded out the top five qualifiers.

Martin, the focus of much of the attention at Richmond as he seeks a modern-era, Winston Cup-record fifth consecutive victory, will start 10th after a lap of 120 805 mph. That was all I could get out of it, he said And Im sure it will pick up a lot later when we get in the race. Maybe we should have scuffed in the tires, but we didnt. Thats a good run, though. Martin is one of six drivers to win four in a row since 1972, when NASCAR reduced the series to no more than 31 races from a schedule of as many as 64.

Richard Petty set the record for consecutive victories with 10 in the 48-race 1967 season. Martins qualifying run certainly doesnt rule out the possibility of winning tonight. He started from the pole at Watkins Glen and Bristol, but was only 12th at Michigan last month and fourth last week at Darlington, C. Labonte got off to a slow start this season, finishing no better than 12th in his first 10 races, a stretch that left him 28th the points standings. Since then, he has been on a steady climb, with two of his three top-10 finishes coming in the last foufr events.

Were just learning week in and week out, and thats all there is to it, he said. Everybody on this team is just trying to get better as we go along. Labonte saw confirmation of that improvement when he drove back into Richmonds garage area after his qualifying run and saw the face of Tim Brewer, his crew chief. It looked like he had just won a lot of money on a gambling bet, Labonte said The pole gave Labonte a boost in his bid to catch Jeff Gordon, the leader in the rookie standings, and guaranteed Labonte a spot in next years Busch Clash race for 1993 pole winners I dont think its hit me yet, he said.
