SCRANTON, PA SATURDAY, AUGUST 24, 1996 cs. (Eht Strantcn QUmta ENTERTAINMENT Major Changes at WYOU Behind the Scenes ticipate in a joint marketing plan to promote CBS programming and is turning over one 30-second ad slot in every locally pro-i grammed half hour to promotion. I We need to be our own best customer, he said. Family values tie-in WYOUs new Were Working for YOU slogan "connects very well with (the regions) family Sook explained. He said the stations husband-wife anchor team of Kevin and Valerie Daniels alsc ties into the family values them You will so i hear a new announcer readir promos and announcing the news opens.

Both the old and new announcers are out-of-town talent who work for a number of stations. From a business standpoint, Sook said local and regional sides have improved since Nexstar moved in. John Dittmeier, formerly with an Orlando, station, has signed on as sales manager and a new account manager has been added. hours a day, than we did when we had a half dozen more people in the department. WYOU will continue to produce local newscasts seen at the end of CNN Headline News each half hour.

It eliminated customized newscasts seen in Schuylkill and Monroe counties. A new business show airs at 5 a.m. and soon The Wall Street Journal Report will air early Sunday morning. Sunday Live with Jim McNulty, will also stay. He buys the air time from WYOU.

'Countarprogramming' Viewers will notice major changes in programming as Sook moves to counterprogram the competition. At 9 a.m., when WNEP and WBRE are running talk shows, WYOU will show Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. The Guiding Light, will follow at 10 a.m. The Price is Right will stay at 11 a.m.

Ricki Lake and Jenny Jones will run in the afternoon slots while Maury Povich will be exiled to the wee hours of the morning. COPS repeats will be the 5 p.m. lead-in to the 5:30 news block. Were looking for underserved audiences in the marketplace, Sook said. The 7 to 8 p.m. block will remain unchanged with Hard Copy and Entertainment Tonight. Both will be heavily promoted. Sook expects CBS will do a lot better than anyone expected, especially on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

There will new graphics, a new news look, new programming and even a new on-air announcing voice. But the major change is behind the scenes: an emphasis on "programming and promotion. WYOU-TV has gone through a seminal upheaval since Perry Sook and his partners at Nexstar Broadcast Group L.P. took over the station from Diversified Communications Inc.

about two months ago. A shakeup in on-and off-air personnel removed several top managers and familiar faces from the offices at 415 Lackawanna Ave. as Sook, 38, a Western Pennsylvania native, moved quickly to cut costs. Unveiling happens Sept. 2 Carpenters were quickly moved in to rebuild the newsroom set and artists began work on a new graphics look.

All will be evident Sept. 2 when the new TV season begins. Look for a new slogan too: Were working for YOU. The new logo, 22 in a red circle, is an update of an old WDAU logo that was last used about 13 years ago. We like to keep as many good elements of the history of the station as possible, Sook said, adding that the new station graphics will be easier to read.

But the changes will be more than cosmetic. Sook is trying to make WYOU a more aggressive player in the local television marketplace. He said WYOU should be able to grow and show improved ratings and revenues in the future. While 22 is a very sound product technically and editorially, the one thing that the station has never done consistently is promote. He said the bulk of Nexstars investment will go into promotion and programming.

Old Forge, PA 457-3570 Firings defended Sook expects no more sweep-Z ing personnel changes, but; pointed out that the New York; Times owners of WNEP, recently dismissed well over aZ dozen people when they bought; an Oklahoma City station. He; said such moves, including the recent axings at WYOU, arel sometimes necessary. Sook said the people who were recently dismissed have been offered the use of station facilities to produce audition tapes. He also allowed both Rich Everitt and Debbie Dunleavy to say on-air goodbyes, something that doesnt always happen when someone is dismissed from an on-air position. She needed an opportunity to have closure.

That was not scripted, it was not approved (cleared) by me. She had the opportunity to say whatever she liked more than maybe I would have wished her to say. But that was her opportunity and she is a class individual, Sook said. He concedes that CBS must still work to make the transition between network and local less choppy, but he is confident it will be done. Sook said that 22 will stress live coverage as much as possible. Make it fun, make it live, make it local. Thats really the guiding influences in our programming. He said WYOU will cover the Pioneer Days parade today, do seven live high school football games (CBS college football commitments will prevent more) and expand its telethon commitments.

WYOU will still have 10 reporters on the street between full- and part-time personnel, Sook said, and staffing has been scheduled so personnel are on duty around the clock. He said this is competitive for this market. I think we are doing a better job of covering the news, 24 DJ J0N1IY D.
