Adv. JULY 26, 1901 During heavy thunder storm last evening lightning struck and destroyed the large barn on the farm of Jesse Stevenson, near New Windsor, Carroll County. Another severe thunder storm visited Hanover and vicinity last evening and many residents pronounced it the worst storm of the season. Lightning struck St. Catholic church steeple, which is now in the course of reconstruction; the house of Mrs.

Reuben Sprenkle, East Middle Street, was struck with considerable damage to the roof and interior, the house of Edward Snyder Centennial Avenue, had the root badly damaged by a stroke of lightning; the dwelling of David D. Schmidt, Baltimore Street, the dwelling of Alvin R. Nissly, Abbottstown Street, the house of E. A. Adams, Centennial Avenue, and that of W.

J. Adams, West Chestnut, were struck by lightning. On several vacant lots near the residence of F. Y. Stambaugh, Centennial Avenue lightning struck four times, plowing up the ground each time.

The large barn on the farm of Samuel Forry, east of Hanover, was destroyed by fire after being struck by lightning. The lowest bid received by the York school board for the erection of a new 16-room school building was $57.000. The board considered the bids enormously high and refused to award a contract. Paul Metzger, son of the Rev. J.

A. Metzger and wife, Pleasant Street, this place, died at the University Hospital at Philadelphia, aged 17 years. FIRE was what remained of the American Machine and Foundry Co. plant on East Middle Street after a $100,000 early morning fire July 27, 1901. The extensive machine shop department of the American Machine Foundry Company, together with the blacksmith shop, located between the railroad crossings on East Middle Street, was destroyed by fire which broke out about 3 this morning. John Dubs, the night watchman at the shops, discovered the fire and at once hastened to the engine room, pulled the whistle wide open and tied it down. The hoarse screams of the big whistle awoke many persons. Noah Pressell, at work at lime kilns, a short distance away, ran to the engine house on East Chestnut Street to turn in the alarm. There he met the night watchman, George Feeser, and the engine house watchman, Frank Alwood, and they together with the assistance of other firemen succeeded in getting the fire fighting apparatus to the scene of the fire.

By 5 two hours after the alarm, the fire was practically extinguished, but the main shop was a mass of red wt ruins, with only the walls left standing. The loss was estimated at $100,000. Tool loss to employes was estimated at 51.000. Over 200 men are thrown Dut of employment. The breaking of the clapper on the engine house bell prevented extended ringing of the alarm.

The charter of the Sheppard Myers Shoe Co. was recorded at York yesterday. The company is capitalized at $25,000. Harry Young Abbottstown Street, was bitten on the right arm by Edward Young's St. Bernard dog.

Dr. H. M. Alleman treated the wound. The ice cream festival at the engine house on East Chestnut Street, will not be held this evening, the premises, owing to the fire this morning, being occupied by wet hose.
