Vur nniv be s. ur nl ia, (.,. wo da. KfiwKti Transnctimis Very Light Market Doll Pricet IliM'uly MniitttiiaecW Tho effect of the holiduy upou all parties concerned was by no means beneficial in its character and the business in stocks yesterday was remarkable only for its dullness. Many of the loading operators failed to appear, and not being ia a philosophical frame of mind, were disposed rather to Krumbla at the condition of afl'uirs than to do their best with things as they wore.

Tlioso who would be glad to see Pennsylvania go lower complained because tho company was in tho market as a borrowor of luoro money and used Ibis as an argument in favor of lower prices. In our opinion the movement oa tho part of the management was a most judicious one. Instead of issuing more stock at par, on wh icli the prom i would accrno to the stockholders at par aud which wonld participate in the dividends of li per at loast hereafter declared, a loan la placed at 4 per tho proceeds of which are to ho applied to tho payment for the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Haltimoro purchase. How this wcakwis the stock wa are at a loss to perceive Others took for their objective point the coal stocks and hinted at a breaking up of the combination of the great carrying companies. A new deal in tho Northern Pacifies was also mysteriously hinted at, but this last was not of tho gloomy order, tho assorted intention of tho dealers being to pnt up tho prices of tho common shares.

Considering tho dtillnoss that prevailed no one of theso minora was very snccesslul in creating more than a slight uneasiness. Some animation was exhibited in Northom Central and in tho Huntingdon and Broad Tops, both common and prelcrrcd. They all went higher, the formor on steadily increasing earnings aud the near approach of tho dividend period the two latter on favorablo accounts of tho business derived from tho new connection, the lino hav iug now been in operation lor over a week. The great ueed of tho market was a lack of purchasers. Tho return of the absentees to their posts may put a new face upon the proceedings.

Bank stocks weru represented by Fanners and Mechanics' National Bank at 133 and National Bank of tho Northern Liberties at Ml; the dividend paying passenger railways by Philadelphia and Ciray's Ferry at GOJ, as before. United Companies improved $2 to 192; Schuylkill Navigation preferred 1 to 11 Huntingdon and Broad Top i to 14 preferred ditto to Z'4 Butlalo, Pittsburg and Western i to 21, and Northern Central to Soil. Northern Pacific preferred fell off I to Kil common ditto 3 to 44; Lehigh Navigation, for two shares only, i to 4(ii Pennsylvania to Oil, and Heading 1 to 29. All the doings aggregated 114 shares and 15 of loans. Tho condition of tho money market is not essentially changed.

The supply of unemployed capital is largely in excess of all present requirements, and tho rates as a necessary consequence aro easy when tho security offered is undoubted, heavy figures and broad margins only being insisted upou whore the collaterals are of a lancy character. In trade circles there is ouly the usual moderate summer business doing and prices rule steadily. Tho exports aro improving, though checked for a time by the speculative movements of wheat. Mr. A.

C. McCurdy, representing tho Governor Group Gold Mining Company, Rends ns a communication denying tho statement made in theso Colli in ns that its stock was being manipulated by a iiiuo for speculative purposes, aud ciaims that thero is good reason to believe the time is near at hand when the company will be abic to commence a dividend." 114V HI" Wmleru llilinn Tel 1'iKU l'J7t 1 J77. Docs He wit Continue at Speaker Dmiug the Kxtra SotHion? To the Kditor of Thu Timba: It is now understood that there must be an extra Neaaion of tho Leffivhtlure next winter to pasd the apportionment bills. When the Lelslaiuro metta in extra session will the Houe orgruiiaeanaw, or will Speaker Jlowit continue to tliHgnoa the Stttte as the otlloer of the House Inqi'IRKK. Altoona, Mny 30, 1881. TThe term of a LfRmlature i two years, and the oflicera are chosen for tho term.

The organization oi' the House mndo at the opening of the bohhIoii in Januury last, will continue until tho clone of the term of the Legislature, and the State nuiHt benr the dia Kraoe of SpeHlcer Hewit, "the abettor of ringsters" and the "base ol'ickgiiHrd of the chair," as Keure Bcntative Wolfo branded him, aa the prcsidinff ocer of the IIouhc at the extra aefuion. It is probable that the power ot the House, like the powttrof I lie United Statea Senate, extends to tho right to elect new officers at any time, hut it baa not been tlie custom in IVmnaytvania. The question was gravely discussed in 1870. when the second eoHsion was nbout to meet, aa many were with Speaker rattersou'a administration of the Chair, but the power to remove by a new election was deemed doubtful and it waa not attempted. At all extra sessions of the Legislature iu this Slate, called niter the regular scBsion had bceu held, the old organizations have continued.

The people of Altoona and of lilair county must bear more than a common share of tho shame of such a muu as llmvit, in the chair, aa they have elected hi in to the House. It ia to their credit that he has always run behind his party vote in Blair county, and il need. no prophetic pen to predict that he will grow much older before he ever receives a imijority in Lmle lilair" aimin.
