'i Diversified Communications itself is privately held by the reth family. Horace Hildreth Srf governor of Maine in the 1940s, started the company. i The current owners decided to, sell some of its interests so that) members who have reached retire ment age can retire. The station is selling most of its' broadcast operations except for WCJB-TV, Gainesville, one of.

the companys more lucrative op-, erations. 4 Diversified held on to its four cable systems in New England and southern Maine, New Hampshire, and southern Massachusetts. They also publish trade magazines iiK eluding National Fisherman Magazine and Workboat Magazine. Th'e group has a large trade show op- eration. This will mark the third time in almost 10 years that Scranton-based WYOU-TV will be sold.

OB station that has been on the selling block since August, will be bought by a group of Scranton-area investors, Horace Hildreth, president of Diversified Communications, owners of the CBS affiliate, confirmed Friday. Bill Christian, WYOU-TVs general manager, would be one of the part owners. Hildreth would not confirm who the two other investors were. The group would not only buy WYOU but would take over the other two stations Diversified has for sale including WPDE-TV in Florence, S.C., and WABI-TV in Bangor, Maine, Hildreth said. I really dont want to say any more than I have to, Hildreth said.

What do they say? 'It isnt over til the fat lady sings and I havent heard the singing yet. But we are negotiating. Hildreth said he didnt foresee any reason why we wouldnt complete it, but you never know. Until we have something firm, I'd rather not say anything definite, he saidf Diversified Communications bought WYOU in 1986 from Southeastern Capital Corp. That company had bought the station when it was WDAU in 1984.

Diversified bought the station for $22.5 million from Southeastern. Don 7 Smoke in Bed Even on Rood Hildreth thought the idea of local investors purchasing the station would be a great thing for the Scranton area. The ownership would have local flavor, he said. Christian, who referred all calls concerning the sale to Hildreth at Diversified, has been WYOUs vice president and general manager since 1991. Christian, a graduate of Abington Heights High School and an area native, majored in communications at the University of Pennsylvania.

He was hired by WNEP-TV to be the executive producer of PM Magazine. He was production manager for WNEPs Newswatch 16. In 1987, he left the area to become vice president and general manager of WPDE-TV in Florence, S.C., (ironically, one of the stations hell be purchasing). Christian brought that station 0I3 cry. 1 cannot tell you how many people did this to my mother and me.

Syndicate, Inc. favorite newsstand, home delivery. DEAR ANN LANDERS: Last May, my husband and I were driving from West Orange, N.J., to Washington, D.C., to visit our daughter. We were bringing her mattress, which was secured on the top of our truck. Shortly before we got off the New Jersey Turnpike, we smelled smoke-.

We pulled over to the shoulder and discovered that the smoke was coming from the burning mattress. We jumped out and pulled the burning mattress off the roof. A few minutes later, a New Jersey state trooper arrived and tried to extinguish the fire. Shortly after, a fire engine came, and the firefighters finished the job. In view of the fact that none of us was smoking, we asked the firefighters what could possibly have caused the fire.

They said, Someone tossed a lit cigarette out of a car, and it landed on your mattress. I am writing this to alert others to the potential danger of throwing lighted cigarettes from car windows. That thoughtless act could have cost us our lives. V.W., WEST ORANGE, N.J. DEAR V.W.

IN W.O.: Ive had dozens of letters complaining about this problem. Yours was the one that brought home the point most dramatically. Many thanks. DEAR ANN LANDERS: My loving, laughing mother passed away recently after a short bout with cancer. Helping care for her was a privilege, but I encountered a lot of well-meaning but less-than-help-ful assistance from the people around us.

May I offer some advice to your readers? 1. DONT visit the patient unannounced. Please call ahead. 2. DONT send get well cards to a person who is not going to get well.

Sunday, Ch. 22). Fans of the original, which won seven Emmys ana the prestigious Peabody Award, will inevitably be disappointed. Most of the original cast not to mention the writer, director and composer declined to return for this written-for-TV follow-up (which has no connection to Streets of Laredo, author Larry McMurtrys own sequel to his Pulitzer Prize-winning original). Jon Voight takes over from Tommy Lee Jones as Woodrow Call, the former Texas Ranger who now runs a cattle ranch; and Barbara Hershey succeeds Anjelica Huston as Clara Allen, the horse rancher.

Among the key original cast members, only Rick Schroder returns as Newt Dobbs. In the story, written by John Wilder Call asks two old friends (William Petersen, Louis Gossett Jr.) to help him drive a herd of mustangs from Texas to Montana, and a mysterious Mexican woman (Nia Peeples) signs on for the drive. Dobbs, meanwhile, ets mixed up with a Montana land aron (Oliver Reed). Considered on its own terms, this nicely photographed, well-acted saga is reasonably absorbing. As a sequel to what many critics consider the greatest Western in TV history, however, "Return to Lonesome Dove is a pallid failure.

It continues on Tuesday and concludes on Thursday night. 60 Years (7 p.m. Sunday, Ch. 22) is a terrific retrospective of the respected newsmagazine, which celebrated its silver anniversary in September.
