By BOB TOMAINE Upvalley Bureau CARBONDALE A major piece pf northeastern Pennsylvania history was destroyed Tuesday, when the The stone structure had been built before the Civil War to replace earlier wooden shops which had been destroyed by fire, and served as a machine shop for the railroad. Many of the cars which were used by tne railroad to move coal from the Lackawanna valley mines to Honesdale were built there. After abandonment by the Canal Co.s successor, the Railway, the shops were purchased by Frank Zazzera, Carbondale, brother of Marino Zazzera, owner of the Ben-Mar.

By 1976, there was talk of creating a museum in the building, but, due mainly to limited funds, the idea never materialized. former Delaware Hudson Canal Co.s gravity railroad shops were demolished. The property on which the shops were located, at the rear of the Ben-Mar Restaurant, 89 N. Main had recently been purchased by the Ben-Mar. It was the one of the last major buildings in existence from the gravity railroad operations, along with a former station in Waymart.

The Carbondale YMCA, which is on the opposite side of Main Street from the Ben-Mar, had purchased the shops in the late 1970s, with the goal of adaptative reuse, where additional exercise facilities would have been located there. That plan was changed, however, when the YMCA decided to erect a new building on Church Street, rather than make use of the shops. While the YMCA owned the building, a fire destroyed much of the roof and, by the early 1980s, the Carbondale Historical Society and Museum Inc. was attempting to locate a developer who could save the structure. The building once again became the focus of attention several years ago, when city officials forced the YMCA to close the open windows and doors, or else tear the structure down. The YMCA made a number of attempts at sealing it off, but vandals removed much of the wood which was used to close the openings.
