33 THE SCRANTON TIMES, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14, 1989 New 'Vice' Shows Surfacing a HOLLYWOOD Just when you thought Crockett and Tubbs had driven the Testarossa off into the sunset, four new episodes of Miami Vice (10 p.m., Cn. 28) are surfacing. When the network aired its two-hour Vice finale May 21 which concluded with the detectives (Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas) quitting the force the clear implication was that the series had run its course and was destined for rerun heaven. It turns out, however, that NBC rushed the conclusion on during May sweeps and simply shelved four unaired originals that were designed to precede it. With Quantum Leap on hiatus until fall, however, Vice returns on Wednesdays to play off those shows.

This weeks episode, World of Trouble, features a familiar face: Dennis Farina. He plays gangster Lombard, who appeared on the series first season this was before Farina landed his best-known role in Vice producer Michael Manns Crime Story. Vice isnt the only series reappearing unexpectedly on network schedules tonight. Hooperman (9 p.m., Ch. 16) is back with the first of six original episodes.

It was last seen March 22 with an episode ironically entitled The Long So Long and has since been announced as one of the seasons casualties. Tonights 'show finds Harry (John Ritter) partnered with the police commissioners klutzy nephew. Trapped' (9 p.m., USA) is the basic cable networks third made-for-TV movie, and its only a slight improvement over last months ter rible Haunting of Sarah Hardy. This time, USA went to director Fred Walton, whose When a Stranger Calls (1979) turned the telephone into an instrument of terror and whose remake of I Saw What You Did last season on CBS added little to his reputation as a B-moviemaker who merely recycles old themes. Kathleen Quinlan (I Never Promised You a Rose Garden) plays the manager of a high-rise, nigh-tech city office building who is trapped inside after hours while a killer prowls about murdering executives, secretaries and security guards.

Barely escaping several brushes with tne anonymous killer, she stumbles on an industrial spy (Bruce Abbott), and together they try to outwit him and survive. Walton offers an occasional scare but for the most part, Trapped merely boasts the usual shadowy figures, brutal beatings and unbelievable coincidences common to the genre. TONIGHTS OTHER HIGHLIGHTS For wrestling fans, the three-hour Clash of tne Champions VII (8:05 p.m., TBS) airs live from Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, N.C., with NWA and WCW tag teams vying for the coveted (thats what it says here) World Tag Team Championship Title. Head of the Class (8:30 p.m., Wasn't 'Trapped' Television Role ii 'iMt v4T ij in; aiMi- Shes not a fighter, but when she finds herself in this situation she has to pull herself together and fight her way through it. Kathleen Quinlan Quinlan recently completed a stage role in Les Liaisons Danger-euse at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles.

She has been in such movies as American Graffiti, Lifeguard, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, The Promise, The Runner Stumbles, Sunday Lovers, Hanky Panky and Sunset. Among her TV movies are Shes in the Army Now, When She Says No, Blackout and Children of the Night. Quinlan grew up in the San Francisco suburb of Mill Valley, where she was a gymnast and diver. She made her film debut in One Is a Lonely Number doubling for Trish Van Devere in a high dive sequence. I was 17 at the time, she said.

They came to our high school and looked at the diving team. I did American Graffiti because they had a cattle call audition at our school. I went in and read for a part, never thinking in a million years Id do any acting. I had a dream of going to the myself. running back and forth Tietween acting and athletic training.

My coach said I had to make a choice and get my priorities straight. Finally, I chose acting. ELSEWHERE IN TELEVISION The Love Boat is setting sail Quinlan Into New By JERRY BUCK AP Television Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) A decision to work late in her high-rise office building put Kathleen Quinlans character in the wrong place at the wrong time. In the USA Network movie Quinlan plays Marianne, the building manager, who is caught inside the building, first with a thief, then with a killer. What I like about it is that shes not a woman who thinks of herself as a fighter, said Quinlan, but when she finds herself in this situation she has to pull herself together and fight her way through it.

Quinlan calls Trapped a female version of Die Hard, the feature film starring Bruce Willis, which was set in a Los Angeles high-rise as the terrorists robbery-hostage drama unfolded. This is about a man whose family has been killed by toxic waste dumped by a huge corporation, she Usually this hind of movie is male-oriented I loved doing all the physical stuff. I did all the stunts except going off the building. Kathleen Quinlan said. When he hits the building, an industrial thief and myself are trapped in the building.

We become the target. So it becomes more one-on-one than Die Hard. Usually this kind of movie is male-oriented. I loved doing all the physical stuff. I did all the stunts except going off the building.

Im a jock so if I get a role where I can act and do something physical Ill take it. The character of Marianne wasnt written in depth, so I put myself in her shoes and developed the character myself. It was all taken very seriously, but its really a fun, entertainment piece. The movie, which also stars Bruce Abbott as John, the thief, has its premiere today on the USA Network. It was written by Fred Walton, who directed it on location in Dallas.

We filmed in Dallas because they have some incredible, buildings there, Quinlan said. We shot it indoors at night. Im a very outdoor person, and Im not a night person. This girl likes to close her eyes at 10:30. We worked from 6 at night until 6 in the morning.

It has a lot of action so you really had to be on your toes. Im a former gymnast and so is Bruce Abbott ana it really helped. We did one stunt with an explosion. Trust me, if Id known it was going to explode so big I wouldnt have done it. Our stunt people were very good, and they had to test me before letting me do the stunts.

Ch. 16) repeats the second part of its Mission to Moscow episode, filmed on location in the Soviet Union. Arvid races to reach the U.S.-Soviet debate location in time for its closing moments. Armand Assante stars in feeli-zaire the Cajun on American Playhouse (9 p.m., Ch. 46).

This 1986 theatrical release casts Assante as a roguish folk healer in the bayou country of Louisiana, 1859. Robert Duvall has a cameo as a preacher. The fourth episode of Tales From the Crypt (10 p.m., HBO) stars Lea Thompson as an ex-hooker who pawns her beauty, lands an eligible bachelor and soon learns that she is aging rapidly. Howard Deutch (Some Kind of Wonderful) directed. CULT CHOICE All but one of Cole Porters songs for DuBarry Was a Lady (12 noon, TNT) were scrapped when that Broadway show was made into a 1943 musical comedy.

But the movie does have Lucille Ball, Red Skelton, Gene Kelly, Zero Mostel and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, dressed, hilariously, in 18th-centuiy wigs and costumes. Friendship is the one Porter song that remains. SERIES NOTES Hard Time on Planet Earth and The Robert Guillaume Show are the only other new offerings. On Hard Time (8 p.m.. Ch.

22), Jesse tries to prevent a fellow alien from dominating Earth On Growing Pains (8 p.m., Ch. 16), Maggie hires a nanny On Unsolved Mysteries (8 p.m., Ch. 28), the attackers of a California woman who was left brain-damaged are sought. c1989, United Feature Syndicate, Two Shows Aren't Alike By GAIL SHISTER Knight-Ridder Newspapers If you want to stay on Bill OReillys Christmas card list, doht mention King Worlds Inside Edition and Foxs A Current Affair in the same breath. Its unfair to lump the broadcasts together, Editions acerbic host said this week in Philadelphia, where he was doing a show.

Current Affairs main focus is titilla-tion. Theres nothing wrong with that, but we try to entertain. I dont have anything bad to aay about Current Affair, but theres ho similarity at all between us. Their show is 25 percent journalism and 75 percent flash. Ours is the opposite.
