Labonte, the 19B4 Winston Cup champion who went the last four years without a victory and became an afterthought for many NASCAR fans, won Sundays Slick 50 500 for his third victory of this season. One good thing about this sport is that people on the inside know more than people on the outside looking in, said Labonte, whose four winless years in the 90s covered one season with Richard Jackson and three with Billy Hagan. fe-x 54.ssm,x: 4 AP Photo Terry Labonte was all alone when he crossed the finish line to win the Slick 50 500 Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway.

wins. He earned $67,885 and averaged a race-record 107.463 mph, breaking the mark of 105.683 set by BUI Elliott in 1989. The final 188 laps of the race were run under the green flag and there were only four caution periods for 27 laps. Jeff Gordon wound up a lap down in fourth, followed by Ted Musgrave, Kyle Petty and Ricky Rudd, who faded after leading most of the first 100 laps of the race. race early.

A broken cylinder head ended Earnhardts streak of seventh-place-or-better finishes at eight races. The race was slowed by a 26-minute red flag after John Andretti slid through the oil from Rick Masts blown engine and punched a hole in the third-turn wall on lap 32. Track workers had to cover the three-square-foot hole with steel boilerplate and Andretti was taken to a hospital for observation and later released. We had good people, but we didnt have very good equipment and we didnt wina race for a long time. That was pretty frustrating for me at the time You cant sell used parts one week to buy new parts to race (with) the next weekend. Thats what we were doing there at tbe end. The move to Hendrick Motor-sports at the beginning of the 1994 season replacing Ricky Rudd, who started his own team was the catalyst for bringing Labonte back toward the top of the stock car sport.

The biggest difference this season is with this team, he said after his dominating victory on the one-mile Phoenix International Raceway oval. Weve got good engines and good cars. Weve got a great car owner (Rick Hendrick). He gives us everything we need to work with. The move has paid off in the best season of Labontes career, except for his tide year in his first stint with Hagan On Sunday, he came up with his 12th top-10 finish of the season and held onto seventh position in the Winston Cup standings with just one race remaining.

Labonte led 112 of the final 120 laps and it wasnt much of a contest after the halfway point of the 312-lap race. Most of the leaders fell back into the pack and Labonte put all but two drivers runner-up Mark Martin and pole-starter Sterling Marlin a lap down. Labontes crew gave him a perfect 17.9-second, green-flag pit stop on lap 283 that helped him get his Chevrolet Lumina to the finish line 3.09 seconds half a straightaway ahead of Martins Ford Thunderbird. We knew we had to beat Mark and we knew he got four tires, so we had to do the same thing to stay even with him, Labonte said. It was a great stop.

It was Labontes best finish at Phoenix since he finished second in 1988 and 1989 the first two Winston Cup races at the track. He is the sixth different winner in those seven years.
