It Ir THE KANSAS CITY STAR, SUNDAY, MARCH 19, 1911. 15A Disappearing Missouri Names The Story of the Changes of Names of Counties and County Seats In the Story of Political Van Buren Lost Missouri's Friendship the County Named for Him Was Changed to Ouse by the Legislature. you examine the map of MisI will scuri mathe in names the of early the '40s: counties you of Kinderhook, Niangua, Rives, Decatur and Van Buren. If you will examine the map of Missouri today, you will find the same county boundary lines which originally defined the limits of these counties, but the names of the counties have disappeared from the map. The story of the changes of these county names is the story of political upheaval in the state of Missouri.

In the good old times legislatures changed county names when the individuals whose names had been given to the counties changed their politics. William C. Rives was a Democratic politician of national reputation residing in Virginia. A new county Was organized in Western Missouri. The Democrats were undisputed majority in the Missouri general assembly.

The county was named Rives in honor of the great Virginian. It was organized December 13, 1834. Six years later Mr. Rives changed his political affiliation and supported the national Whig ticket. In 1841 the Missouri general assembly, meeting again with Democratic majority, voted to rename the county of Rives, selecting another Virginian, Patrick Henry, for whom the county should be named.

Hence Rives County disappeared from the map of Missouri and Henry took its place. Cass County had its name changed also for political reasons. had been organized September 14, 1835. was then called Van Buren, in honor of President Martin Van Buren, whom Missourians of that day delighted to honor. Buren in 1848, however, lost the friendship of majority of Missourians was no longer their favorite statesman.

He became presidential candidate of the Free Soil party. The Missouri general assembly, meeting in 1849, wiped the name of Van Buren from the name of Cass, Lewis Cass of county map, substituting, therefor Michigan. Kinderhook County had named for the home of President Martin Van Buren. it had been organized January 29, 1841. Kinderhook County soon lost Its original name, however, and in 1843 it was given the name of Camden, for a county in North Carolina.

To honor George M. Dallas of Pennsylvania, then Vice-President-elect of the United States, the Missouri general assemply in 1844 changed the name of County to Dallas County. The word Niangua is supposed to have been a corruption of the original Indian name, Nehemgar, meaning al stream from many sources. Sedalia has a popular literary club with the original Indian name and there 1s a creek in Southern Missouri with the same name. Niangua County was organized, in 1842.

Ozark County has distinetion, perhaps the solitary distinction among Missouri counties, of having had Its name changed twice, the second time to its original name. It was organized January 29, 1841, as Ozark County. In 1843 its name was changed to Decatur in honor of the famous fighting commodore of the United States Navy, Stephen Douglass. But in 1845 its name was rechanged to Ozark. Holt County, organized in 1841, origInally bore the name of Nodaway, Within a few weeks, however, after this county was organized David Rice Holt, representative: from Platte County, died and the general assembly, then in session, renamed the county of Nodaway in his honor.

The county of Lafayette was originally called Lillard, in honor of James C. Lillard, one of its first settlers. Atchison County was originally called Allen County. When it was detached from Holt County in 1843 it was first named Allen, but shortly afterwards, upon its organization, It was named Atchison, David R. Atchison, then one of the United States senators from Missouri, who served as President of the United States for a day.

Dodge, Donaldson, Meramec counties and others are shown on some of the earlier maps of the state, organized or partly organized, where no such county names may now be found. Soldiers have been: more popular heroes in Missouri than statesmen, if the names of are to determine popularity. Of countieg in Miscounties, souri the names of soldiers have been given to forty-four, while only thirtyone statesmen are thus honored. Scarcely a Missouri county has now under the original name its original county seat. Cedar County has for its county seat a town which has borne three names, the heat of partisan discussion having brought about the change of names.

The name of the county seat of Cedar County was originally Lancaster, which is now the name of the capital of Schuyler County In Northeast Missouri. In 1847. however, the popularity of Gen. John C. Fremont was such that the name of Lancaster was changed to Fremont in honof "the Great Pathfinder," as he was then called.

In 1856 General Fremont became the nominee of the new Republican party for President of the United States and the following winter the legIslature changed the name of Freinont. the county seat of Cedar County, to Stockton, In honor of Commodore Richard Stockton of the United States Navy, who had arrested General Fremont in the Mexican War. The commissioners who located the county sent of Andrew County on April 3, 1841, named it Union. The county court, however, renamed the young town Savannah, which name it still bears. Atchison County's capital was orig inally Linden, so named because of the number of linn or linden trees in neighborhood of the small town.

Its present county sent is Rock Port, often confused with Rocheport, a town on the Missouri River in Boone County. Rock Port is so called because the Tarkio Creek at that point is rocky or stony, Smithton WAS the name of first county seat. of Boone County. When Boone County was organized November 16, 1830, the county seat was named for Gen. Thomas A.

Smith. The Inaccessibiilty of the original county seat caused the removal to Columbia. St. Joseph has not always been the county seat of Buchanan County. The first county seat was Sparta, named for the Greek city, The Mormon War was responsible for the removal of the county seat of Caldwell County.

The first county seat had been Far West. This town, however, WILS partly destroyed and entirely abandoned during the strife with the Mor mons, and the county seat was removed to Kingston, which was named in honor of Austin A. King of Ray County, afterward governor of Missouri. Camden County has had three county seats, Oregon, Erie and the present, Linn Creek. first county seat of Chariton County was sometimes called Old Charlton, and has long ago disappeared from the map.

The present capital is Keytes ville, laid out in 1832 and named by its founder, James Keyte, for himself. Clinton County has twice renamed its county seat without changing its location. It was first called Concord, then Springfield and finally Plattsburg. Pattonsburg was the first county seat County. The present county seat, Gallatin, was laid out in 1837, and named for Albert Gallatin, the old Swiss finaneter, who was Secretary of the United States Treasury from 1801 to 1813.

The county seat of Douglas County was alternately at Ava and at Vera Cruz, but finally Ava was settled upon ag the capital. Franklin County had for its county seat originally Newport, but since 1830 the capital has been removed to Union. Albany, the county seat of Gentry originally called Athens. Bethany, the capital of Harrison County, laid out in 1845, was called Dallas at first. The capital of Holt County, Oregon, was originally known as Finley.

The first county seat Howard County was Old Franklin, on the Missouri River nearly opposite Boonville. Fayette, named for General Lafayette, became the seat in 1823. The first county seat of Jefferson County Herculaneum. In 1835 the capital was removed to the present site, then called Monticello, for Jefferson's home in Virginia. Mount Vernon was the first capital of Lafayette County, but now Lexington is its capital.

Troy, the county seat of Lincoln County, was originally called Woods Fort. The first county seat of McDonald County was at Rutledge. It was subsequently removed Pineville, as which town was originally called Marysville. The first county seat of Macon County was Box Ankle, afterward Bloomington and now Macon. When Madison County was organized its capital was St.

Michael. It is now Fredericktown. The county seat of Maries County was originally called Vie Anna, for a daughter of Dr. V. G.

Latham, the presiding judge of the county court. The name was gradually changed to Vienna, perpetuating the name of the little girl, who had died. California, the capital of Moniteau County, was originally called Boonsborough. The first county seat of Montgomery County Pinckney on the Missouri River. Afterwards it was removed to Lewiston.

Both Lewiston and Pinckney are now abandoned towns. Later Danville was selected as the county seat and from Danville--now a deserted village--the county seat has been removed in part to Montgomery City. Millville, first county seat of Morgan County, is no longer on the state's map. It has been succeeded by Versailles, the present county seat. Gayoso, the first county seat of Pemiscot County, was named for a prominent Spanish official of the early Caruthersville is the present capital. Pettis County has had three county seats, St. Helena, Georgetown and Sedalia. Sedalia was so named by its founder, Gen. George R.

Putnamville was the first county seat of Putnam County, named for Gen. Israel Putnam of Revolutionary, fame. Afterward the county located at Winchester and then at the town of Harmony, the present name of which is Unionville. Ray County had for its first county seat Bluffton, but since 1828, Richmond.
