Funeral plans for Plains Twp. firefighter have been finalized Hiring: Teachers union is interested in what FBI investigation will yield Funeral arrangements for veteran Plains Township firefighter Robert Kubicki, 60, have been finalized. The viewing will be held at the Yanaitis Funeral Home, on Stark Street in the Hudson section of Plains Township, Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. The Funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday at the St.

Joseph's Church. Kubicki, of Plains Township, died late Wednesday night after his pickup truck collided with a vehicle driven by Tommy Patton, of Noxen, at Wilkes-Barre Boulevard and Butler Street in Wilkes-Barre. Kubicki was pronounced dead upon arrival at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Luzerne County Coroner John Corcoran ruled Kubicki's death a homicide Thursday night. City spokeswoman Bridget Giunta said police haven't decided wheth-er charges will be filed against Patton.

Police did confirm Thursday that Patton had been taken for blood- alcohol testing, a standard operating procedure. Local, state and national firefighter unions have been notified of Kubicki's death, and a large crowd is expected to attend his services. Kubicki's casket will be carried in a procession from the funeral home to St. Joseph's Church by the Plains Township fire engine that Kubicki rode for 35 years. Kubicki's obituary may be found on page 32.

"Anytime there is an opening, each board member is allowed to say 'this is who I she said. "So you don't actually know for a name that you've given where you stand as far as their interviews." It is necessary to pick names, Evans said, because there can be hundreds of candidates for some jobs and it would not be practical to interview every one. Evans said she did not know if any of the other board members had nominated friends or family for positions, but maintained that she has not.

During his tenure, Corco- ment on the investigation, but is interested to see where it will lead and wants to make sure the union is prepared to help any of its teachers. "I'm very concerned about all of my members," Ney said. "I just want to make sure everyone is protected. But if questions need to be answered, I'm sure my members will answer them. Michael R.

"Anytime anybody was hired it was a board consensus, we asked about the person, we discussed the person," Corcoran said. "Somebody wasn't just put in there, we knew about the person, we knew about their record, what they did, their accomplishments, everything about them. Because of that and the economic crisis, advertisers had mostly abandoned WYOU's newscast, he said. "It's really disheartening because we know the typical CBS viewer tends to also be a news viewer, based on all of our research," Thatcher said.

"We also know that they like to watch local news, but the sad part is that whatever we offered, it just didn't measure up." Because WBRE provided content for the WYOU news broadcast, it wasn't immediately clear what on-air and off-air talent would be affected. Thatcher said he would have to defer to WBRE General Manager Lou Abitabilo for comment on specific layoffs. Efforts to reach Abitabilo were not successful.
