VIS ALT A TTMES-DELTA WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1951. PAGE TEN TIMES-DELTA pog I OoublG M5in Wrestling Event On Tap Saturday By JIM THOMAS (AP Outdoors Editor) Duck hunters who may have disturbed this week by of sickness among the ducks the Suisun Marsh will be glad know the trouble definitely is up in a year or two with a much closer answer than has been had before. So far, the field workers, under direction of Donald H. Fry, senior marine biologist, have tagged about 500 salmon BOB HEMINGWAY Phone 4-5821 Calif ommia Teams Inligh Dm (Football ffemse NEW YORK, Oct. 17.

(.4) Four California teams one of which hasnt even won a game share offensive leadership of the nations colkge football squads this week. College of the Pacfiic leads in yards gained on the ground, 1,517 in four games for a 379.3 average. COP Is ninth in total offense with 1,688 yards for an average of 422. The figures were reported today by the national collegiate athletic been reports in to not botulism. John Chattin, assistant chief of the bureau of game management, reports the sickness is lead poisoning but not the kind the ducks will get after Oct.

26. This kind comes from eating lead shot off the bottom of the marsh, where Grizzly, Wheeler and Simmons Islands have been duck shooting areas for a hundred years or so. The ducks get the lead shot in their gizzards and the digestive acids produce a lead-oxide, which gets into the blood stream and cuts off oxygen intake. The result is much like botulism but the disease is not contagious and is confined to the comparatively small number of ducks that get considerable shot. About 800 to 1,000 ducks out of the 500,000 or more in the marsh have been affected thus far.

and half that many steelhead, using a series of fyke nets at points about 5 miles north of the mouth of the Feather River. Probably twice that many fish will he tagged before the fall run ends. The number of fish tagged will be but a tiny fraction of the fish moving upstream, but by observing the spawning beds and bodies recovered along the streams after spawning, and figuring the ratio of tags to untagged fish, the biologists will come up with a pretty accurate estimate of the total population. While the population numbers of the Sacramento salmon run is an uncertainty, there is no uncertainty that the northern California coastal salmon fishery, from Monterey Bay north, is dependent almost entirely on the Sacramento run. Fry and Eldon P.

Hughes, also of the California bureau of marine fisheries, are authors of the following paragraphs: The most important thing accomplished by the two tagging experiments (off the northern California coast) was to demonstrate beyond any possible doubt that the Sacramento-San Joaquin River system is the primary source of salmon to the trolling industry off the California coast. The same applies of course to northern California sports salmon fishing. The paragraph is quoted from bulletin No. 2 of the Pacific marine fisheries commission, which has just been released. The excellent analysis of the California salmon situation by Fry and Hughes is well worth the study of sportsmen and commercial men alike who are interested in the perpetuation of the salmon.

Loyola; which they defeated 41-29. The Tigers have piled up 1,517 yards along the ground against only 171 yards overhead. Bears Lead Coast In Total Offense LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17. UP) California boasts the strongest rushing game and Oregon the leading passing outfit in the Pacific Coast The unbeaten Bears have marched a net 1359 yards for a game average of 339.8, almost 100 yards per game better than the runner-up Washington Huskies.

Thrice beaten Oregon has passed 797 yards in four games for an average of 199.3 a game, completing 50 of 118 attempts. California also leads in total offense, making 513 yards via the air for a grand total of 1872 in four games. Visalia Rodeo fans will not have to go without entertainment Saturday night. Plenty of action is in store at the Visalia Civic Auditorium when. Promoter Louie Miller presents a double main event wrestling card.

Headliners are Dr. Lee Grable, Wild Red Berry, Vincent Lopez and Firpo Zbyszko. Clashing in the first main event will be Lopez, former Mexican heavyweight champion, and Zbyszko, 240 pounds of muscular humanity from Poland. Lopez, longtime Visalia favorite, made his first appearance of the season here last week when he teamed up with Dr. Grable to lay out Berry and Ivan the Terrible Russian, in a tag match.

This is Zbyszkos first time in the local arena. He has been in this country only a short time. He looks the part of a villain, having a head with no more hair than a cue ball, and a mustache which curls to a point near the edge of his lips. It will be a grudge battle between Grable and Berry in the second main event. The Doctor got Berry in a neck lock last Saturday, cast a hypnotic spell and then threw the wild redhead for the best two-out-of-three.

Berry was slightly peeved when he recovered and found out what happened so he demanded a rematch as soon as possible. Grable obliged, and Berry has promised to have the hypnotist grappler down and out before the Doc has a chance to use that hypnotism stuff on me or anyone else. Not satisfied with having two main events, Promoter Miller has arranged for a tag match to start things off Saturday. On one side will be Filipino Senation Ray Ur-bano and Chesty Chick Garibaldi. Their opponents are a couple of meanies.

Tearful Ted Christy and Judo Jack Terry. Judo Jack made his first local appearance last week against Ur-bano. Urbano thoroughly trounced the judo expert and won when Terry started using rough and unsportsmanlike tactics. PCL Counsel Testifies Before House Group WASHINGTON, Oct. 17.

UP) Phil Wrigley, owner of the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Pacific Coast League team; was todays top-billed witness before congressmen investigating whether baseball is a monopoly. Wrigley fits right in where yesterdays testimony left off. The house judiciary subcommittee handling the probe centered all day yesterday on the farm system, and in particular the Pacific Coast League. Leslie OConnor, a Chicago law yer who is counsel foi the Coast League, was the chief witness. OConnor was for 23 years a close adviser to baseballs first commissioner, Judge Kenesaw M.

Landis. OConnor said the farm system is on its way to destroying the structure of organized baseball. This, he said, was because the farm system allows major teams to hold down good players (if a farm club, for instance, signs a good second baseman, but the major club al ready has one, the former may be put into cold storage; and because minor league farm teams lose revenue through inability to sell players. On the Pacific Coast situation, OConnor gave the congressmen a peek at a plan he said is being worked out to keep objections from the west. These are that the big leagues are keeping the Pacific Coast from having its own big leaguer or having big league teams moved from the east to the west.

He said he could not discuss details, but that one change woulc be a provision allowing a Pacific Coast player vto indicate in his contract whether he would be sub ject to draft by a big league team WITH AMERICAN LEAGUERS Bob Dillinger, above, infielder for the Chicago White Sox, will appear in Visalia with tlm American League barnstorming team which will clash with a National League outfit Thursday, Oct. 25, at Cubs Park. Visalia Mike Garcia will be among players appearing in the game. bureau. Loyola of Los Angeles defeated in all of its four games nevertheless dominates the aerial department with an average of 239.3 yards per game.

The Lions also are the nations passingest team, averaging 41.5 pitches a game. California is second to Tulsa nationally in total offense with 1,872 yards in four games to average 468. Tulsa is tops with a 474.7 average on 1,424 yards in three games. San Francisco is tenth with 1,637 and a 409.3 California is fourth behind COP, Tulsa and Maryland in rushing with a 339.8 average on a total of 1,359 yards. USF is eighth with 1,125 and a 281.3 average.

COP, Cal and USF all are undefeated in four games each. Two all-time college passing records were set in Southern Methodists 27-20 upset victory over Notre Dame Saturday. It was the first time two major college teams each tossed 40 or more passes against each other. The Mustangs flipped 45; the Irish 44. That 89 total also is a record.

Southern Methodists 45 was the third highest in history, eclipsed only by Loyolas 50 and SMUs 47 both last year. Loyola still is firing at a reckless rate and probably will set an all-time season record. The Lions have averaged 41.5 passes per game. The record average for one season is 31 by Arkansas in 1937. The Loyolans have averaged only 59.5 rushing yards a game.

SMOKER IS BLAMED Fire caused by a careless smoker resulted in an estimated $200 damage to the grocery stock of Wallace G. Milligan, rt. 1, box 1100, Orosi, yesterday afternoon, the division of forestry reported this morning. Another strong objection from the west coast has been to a baseball law allowing the majors to take one player, at a stipulated price, $10,000, from each Pacific Coast team. OConnor also said the coast loop is thinking about becoming an independent league, freeing itself from its present ties to the eastern majors.

He strongly recommended this, in place of Los Angeles or San Francisco taking over present big league franchises. OConnor said Wrigley had told him he would rather have Los Angeles than Chicago. FRESNO BOXER LOSES WASHINGTON, Oct. 17. UP) Julian Keene, Washington light-heavy, decisioned Bert Lytell of Fresno in a 10-round boxing bout last night.

A similar arrangement has been agreed on for the Merced water-fowl management area, where 15 blinds to accommodate 30 shooters will be built. The opening date for the Merced area hasnt been set yet.

Salmon fishermen have continued to have from fair to good luck off the Golden Gate. A check of the sports fishing fleet out of Sausalito Sunday showed some 20 boats out. The low boat came in with 9 fish and the high boat with 17, averaging about 18 pounds. But up on the Sacramento River away up the salmon anglers hit them bigger and lots rougher. Charles Barfield, San Francisco barrister and fly fishing enthusiast, was one of the group that tied into the Kings near the mouth of Battle Creek, in southern Shasta county, last Friday.

He hooked two and managed to land both in two days fishing. The biggest was 28 pounds. The rest of the party, using spinning outfits and spinners, were able to get out farther and hooked into the really big ones with disastrous results, including four broken rods and a bunch of lines lost and broken. Striped bass angling seems to be holding up, with the bigger fish being taken from Ottos big break on through the delta and into the rivers. Otto Walker of Oakland got a leg up on the monthly bass rod given away at Franks fishing resort on Bethel Island for the biggest fish brought in each month.

Otto took the lead with a 32-pounder Sunday. Thats no record but its a lot easier to catch a littler one than it is a bigger one, for sure. Last month a 30-pounder stood up until the last day, when a 35-pounder came in. One of the big questions in California fisheries management is the uncertainty about the salmon and steelhead populations in Sacramento River system. Under a tagging program under way on the river now, the fish and game department hopes to come Cjrid ddriejd BERKELEY, Oct.

17. UP) Those 35 points scored against the University of California by Washington State made a strong impression on Bear Coach Lynn (Pappy) Waldorf. So yesterday he had his linemen working on defense while the backs drilled both on offense and defense. The drills were topped off with the first string offense and defense running against Southern California formations. The Bears play USC here Saturday.

End Ed Bartlett was elected game captain. Working with the second unit backfield were Paul Larson of Turlock and Don Harris of Piedmont. LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17. Included in the trio boosted to the varsity was Fred Andrews, a 200-pounder. UCLA meets Oregon in a Pacific Coast Conference game here Saturday.

STANFORD, Oct. 17. (A-) Stanford Coach Chuck Taylor may have some tricks up his sleeve when his undefeated gridders meet Santa Clara here Saturday. Taylor had his offensive units working on new plays yesterday, The defensive platoons scrimmaged against. Bronco plays.

Bobby Griffin, second string offensive guard, came up with a bad knee and probably wont play Sat urday, Taylor said. SANTA CLARA, Oct. 17. UP) Santa Clara will be in for a rough afternoon against Stanford Saturday if scrimmaging is any indication. The Broncos drilled one hour yesterday against the Indians 7-man line system and only one touchdown was tallied.

That came on a 30-yard run by Halfback Jack McMahon. Today, Coach Dick Gallagher said he plans to work his defense against the Stanford offensive plays. SAN JOSE, Oct. 17. (AV-The most important sections of a gridiron, according to San Jose State Coach Bob Bronzan, are within the 20-yard lines.
