Callan, of ABC's "Lois Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," has been a regular on three series, guested on more than 100 TV shows, has written five books, Is a party hostess extraordinaire (one of her books, "Life of the Party," shares her secrets) and raised three children alone while pursuing her acting career.

She says her biggest role is being Mom in real life and on screen. "1 have been so many people's mothers," she says with a laugh. In addition to playing Dean Cain's TV mom, Martha Kent, she was recently seen as Eric Roberts' mom in the Fox TV movie "Saved By the Light" "I sin just such a MQ111, what with raising my kids I'm a Wheaties kind of person. I couldn't ever be a ienune fatale. It was this self-awareness of what roles she could play that helped Callan win parts when she moved to New York in 1968.

His birthplace was the ghetto where the only white face he ever saw was from the back window of the family car when the Williams' ventured outside the neighborhood. Yet his parents' rich, empowering legacy to their offspring was "an unbelievable work ethic" and a belief in God. "The kids I talk to don't believe in God and now they've got nothing to hold on to. Do I think the freedom better, the encouragement to believe in Tod 'would have made a difference in their lives? Maybe, maybe not.

But even a small child who goes to church or synagogue, not knowing why he's there, knows enough to understand something. "He knows that the people around him have placed their hearts and souls in a place where virtue is rewarded, where you must atone for your sins, where good triumphs over evil. He knows that he matters," said Williams. Another subject close to Williams' heart is his family second wife Grace, his 27-month-old son Montel II, and 11-month-old daughter, Wynter-Grace. Forgetting for a moment the professional accolades, Williams easily slips into the persona of proud dad.

"Last night, I walked in the door and my daughter. Wynter-Grace was across the room. She actually picked up her hand and blewme a kiss. That was it. 'What do you want? A new car? What he heartily laughed.

When it comes to professional challenges, Williams views himself as just getting started. "I feel that I've only gotten my little toe and maybe, my second toe wet," he said. "There's so much I want to do." the most cooperative locations, from the school board and the principal right on down to the students," saidWilliams, who holds the distinction of being the first black enlisted in the Marines to graduate from both the U.S. Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I., and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

"Even outdoors, the director will shout 'Quiet on the set' and 300 pupils will stand around watching. You can hear a pin drop," he added. By way of appreciation, the production team has established a $5,000 scholarship fund for the school. "What I'm really hoping to accomplish with the series is open communication between parents and their children. Even if they don't watch the show together, hopefully they'll cross paths in the kitchen afterwards and say, 'Hey, what did you think about Flea or said Williams, whose Denver-based, Emmy Award-winning community affairs program supplied the genesis for "The Montel Williams Show." Writing yet another chapter, Williams's one-part autobiography, one-part inspirational book, "Mountain, Get Out of My Way," will be released March 13 by Warner Books.

Penned with co-author Daniel Paisner, the 207-page book employs simple down-to-earth language to recount a rather unique story about the youngest of four children, born to a bus-driving father and nurse's aide to mom roles, or nurturing roles, which are actually synonymous." Martha's not your average mom. "She's hip, she's not afraid," says the woman who plays her. "She's just really cool" Speaking of which, what about her own first name, that without a period? Cann explains she was born Katherine and called lay while growing up. While teaching high school, her husband at the time suggested, "'Wouldn't it be neat if it was just Now that's all that's left of my original name, since Callan was his name. But the is plenty," she adds with a laugh.

Callan, who grew up adoring Betty Grab le and Esther Williams, says she got the acting bug at 5. But, she adds, "My idea of what an actor was had nothing to do with being an actor." She acted in school, studied drama at Texas University at Denton, taught drama at a girls' Catholic school and started a children's theater. Her own career was somewhat on hold during her 11-year marriage. When it ended, she headed to New York. "It didn't seem like a huge decision then.

First of all, you're young and dumb," she says of taldng her kids to the Big Apple from Oklahoma, where they lived while her husband worked on his doctorate. As Callan's acting career took off, her writing followed suit. Her first book, "The Los Angeles Agent," came out in 1986. Also published: "The New York Agent Book," "The Script Is Finished, Now What Do I Do?" and "Directing Your Directing Career." Her "how-to" books, as she are updated annually, whichleeps her busy, as does her newfound interest in screenvaiting. But the most important part of her day is the daily phone conversations to each of her children.

Just like a mom. "Lois tft Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" airs Sundays on ABC. "s1 thE jus het a but wh big tirn nee' all la irlui Bet her day is the daily phone con- versations to each of her children. Just like a mom. Lois et Clark: The Neu) Adven- tures of Superman" airs Sundays on ABC.

"Think of Ronny Howard if he tried to be anyone else. We're very definitely who we are." Throughout her career which Includes her first role as Peter Doyle's blowzy wife in the 1970 sleeper "Joe" Callan says she has "played some career women and snobby bitches, but I think I bring the most insight and heart i -cut, Make no mistake, this isn't "Beverly Hills, 90210." That's not what Williams had in mind when he first pitched the idea to CBS back in our characters won't spend five years in their senior year before graduation. The cast will continue to and actors will graduate each June," the 39-year-old per-'former explained. Saying with a laugh that his Series proposal outlasted three network presidents, Williams proved the old adage about ignorance being bliss.

"The idea for the series evolved out of my motivational talks with 'at-risk' kids. I didn't know you had to be a member of the Screenwriters Guild to write a script and sell the idea," he said. Dictated by Guild bylaws, Williams won't become a member in good standing until the series is renewed and he is paid for the first script that sold network heads on "Matt Waters." Given the green light, cast and crew set up shop in Toronto for the first two episodes. Financially It was a lot cheaper, but Williams balked. "I'm contractually bound to 'The Montel Williams Show' which we film each Thursday and Friday in Manhattan, so it was a real hardship bouncing back and forth between the two cities," he said.

Searching for a more feasible site, Williams put a pin in a map of Manhattan and then drew at circle within an 80-mile radius. "I wanted to be within an hour's drive of New York," he explained. Executive producer James D. Parriott found a site on the fringes Manhattan and then drew at circle within an 80-mile radius. "I want- ed to be within an hour's drive of New York," he explained.
