"My legs felt great and playing on this turf was like playing some old-school street football on cement," said Adams. "And the line, a Mack truck could have gone through the holes they were making." As PCT fans stormed the field to celebrate with their team, one fan not in attendance was Michael Adams, who missed the game to see high school teammate and former PCT all-state linebacker Gerald Hayes play for the University of Pittsburgh. Rayshawn didn't mind Michael's absence at all.

He told him he could miss the game. "1 told him I would handle my business so he could go to the other game," said Adams. "He can watch it on tape now." One person who'll be glad if he never seems another Adams guar zled for a second possession, Adams took over, taking a quarterback keeper 9 yards for a score. He followed up with a perfectly thrown two-point conversion pass to Jason Van Valkenburgh to make the score 16-0 with a minute left in the first quarter. After another three-and-out by Emerson, Adams appeared to put the game out of reach early when he blazed 39-yards on the Roosevelt Stadium turf for a score that made it 22-0.

"We came in looking to contain him but he just made some big plays on his own," said Emerson coach Edwin Marinez. "I think he made more plays this game than he did all year It was a big-time game and he stepped up with a big-time performance." Emerson appeared ready to get back in the game when the Hudson County school marched 69 yards for a score to pull within 22- 8. Another turnover by the home team ended their push, however, football. He stepped up like he always has all season," Passaic Tech coach John Iurato said of Adams. "His performance was close to Mike's.

It may have even been alit-tie better. He came here with an attitude that he was in control of this team and he was the difference. He was the factor." Much like Michael had been for the '98 team. The current University of Delaware defensive back rambled for 174 yards on touchdowns of 56 and 85 yards to help PCT beat Union Hill 48-6 in the '98 title at Giants Stadium. Who better than he to offer Rayshawn some valuable pregame advice from quarterback to quarterback? "He just told me to come in here and play my A game," Rayshon said.

"I just had to avoid a lot of mistakes and go all out and I knew we'd win today." After PCT marched 67 yards on Its first possession for a touchdown, and Emerson's offense fiz By rims GALARCEP Herald News UNION CITY From the No. 8 on his jersey to the flashy moves he possesses, Passaic Tech quarterback Rayshawn Adams was a mirror image of his older brother Michael, save for one difference. Until now. Michael guided the '98 Bulldogs to the school's first state championship with a masterful performance in the title game. Rayshawn had his chance to match Michael on Saturday and he left both his teammates and opponents feeling a serious case of deja Adams amassed 69 yards on nine carries, and three of those carries saw him reach the end zone untouched during a 40-8 rout of Emerson (Union City) in the North 1, Group 4 title game.

It helped the Bulldogs roll to a 40-8 win in the North 1, Group 4 final.

I PCT: Dominates Emerson to Capture North lp Group 4 By IVES GALARCEP Herald News UNION CITY Whether it was the hunger of a competitor or the innocence of youth, something made Passaic Tech's Kareem Franklin want an assignment most defenders would avoid. The junior's task? Play man-to-man coverage on Emerson's Miguel Merrick, a wide receiver who already shredded two defenses in this year's playoffs. If Franklin failed, the Bulldogs would be in serious trouble. But if he succeeded, PCT would have a tremendous chance at winning the school's second state football title. With a little help from a merciless PCT pass rush, Franklin stifled Merrick for the entire North 1, Group 4 final Saturday, holding the standout receiver to two catches for 20 yards two weeks after Merrick torched West Milford for 360 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.

Merrick's silent Saturday allowed Passaic Tech to coast to a 40-8 win. "I had to prove something. They said I couldn't stick film but knew what I could do," Franklin said. "I had confidence in myself. There wasn't anything he could do that I couldn't match." Merrick's struggles on offense were tied to a Passaic Tech pass rush that gave Emerson quarterback Joan Quezada no time to throw.

Quezada didn't complete a pass in the first half, going 0-for-10 with an interception. "They just put too much pres pass and had a 31-yard kickoff return. "What is there he can do that I can't? I wasn't going to let him beat me deep. I kept him in front of me and I think he was frustrated." Said Merrick: 'Today, they were the better team. I usually want the game to come to me but their defensive line got pressure on Quezada." Quezada was pressured all afternoon, and more often than not, by a different defender.

On first down, it was usually Van Valkenburgh from the end or Leon Miller up the gut. If Emerson elected to run, Johnson made the stop in the middle. On second down, PCT wOuld rotate in its quicker unit, with' 5- foot-8, 150-pound nose gualt James Greene sneaking through the line, or senior Davon Roberts speeding in from the secondary.14 "We knew every play they were going to run, and we were there' before they did it," Van Valkenburgh said. "We put the little guts in there and got right through the line. This was one of my better defensive days, and I'm not the best defensive player." fl Saturday, it was hard to figure out who was.

ti 1, sure on the quarterback," said Merrick, who is considering offers from Iowa, Rutgers and North Carolina. "It's like in basketball: If your point guard's got pressure all over him he's not going to get many passes off." Franklin did his share to stifle Merrick, defending three passes, including one in the end, zone. Merrick also ran, the ball for 22 yards on nine carries, three of which were stopped by Franklin tackles. "How many catches did Merrick have today, one?" asked Passaic Tech coach John Iurato. "We knew all along that Kareem was a topnotch player.

We were going to cover Merrick one-on-one and focus on stopping their fullback (Manauris Arias) and we did that." Merrick did show some flash on his longest catch of the day, a 15- yarder that saw him spin on a dime and get past Franklin. His second catch was less successful as Franklin slammed him to the turf after a 5-yard gain. Franklin didn't Just top Merrick In the defensive battle. He wound up with more receiving yards (33) and kick return yards (30) than Merrick. "Everyone was talking about Merrick this and Merrick that.

Kareem's a real good player, too, and he wanted to prove that," said PCT quarterback Rayshon Adams. "He had Merrick on lock." Franklin's performance will add to his growing reputation as one of the top Juniors in the state. It also will likely mark the last time he's seen as the underdog in a head-tohead battle. Continued from Page El "I'm just too happy right now, I'm emotional," Green said. "I felt this on the bus ride here.

I knew we had this from the door, before we even stepped on the field." The supposed marquee matchup between Emerson receiver Miguel Merrick and PCT's Kareem Franklin didn't materialize. PCT did an amazing Job on Merrick; he didn't catch a pass in the first half and finished with two receptions for 20 yards. Merrick carried nine times for 21 yards and was limited to 36 total return yards on two kickoffs and one punt return "I felt so good out there," said Franklin, who caught a 33-yard GET flID OF es a le andles fORM301itettUal ULTRASONIC TUMESCENT AXT cosmooLNJ 4t-r- iogt Let Us Open Up to You About Steel Doors System Sta-Trui steel doors have a lock on the entry-door market.
