The Elks Is known primarily as a family club. Its rolls carry the names of members, whose fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers -ceded them In membership. Eagen, of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, who served two successive terms as exalted ruler.

No other member has enjoyed such honor. Justice Eagens son, Mike present loyal knight of Che lodge, will in due course also serve as exalted ruler. Former District Atty. Carlon M. OMalley, an exalted ruler, has seen his son, Atty.

Carlon M. OMalley occupy the distinguished post of exalted ruler, as well as district deputy grand exalted ruler. OMalley who, also, was chairman of the building committee for the present home, shares the honor of being past district deputy exalted ruler with PER Max Silverman, and the late PER John Denne-baum. The late former district attorney, David J. Reedy and exalted ruler, was followed in due course by his son, Atty.

E. Cunningham serve as exalted ruler. The present exalted ruler, Gerald Raymond, was preceded by his father, Vito Raymond, as exalted ruler. Scranton Elkdom was served for 67 years by William S. Gould as its secretary.

It was the longest tenure for a secretary in the history of the organization, or any organization. Bill Gould retired In March, 1962. He was Initiated into the lodge on April 20, 1893; elected secretary on Nov. 8, 1894. During the course of his portfolio, Bill Gould, also served as secretary of Pennsylvania Elks for 42 years.

He died on Feb. 1, 1963, in his 91st year, Paul Kelly, popular insurance executive, and a past exalted ruler, now is in the prestigious role of secretary, where he has served for three years. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Is exactly that: benevolent and protective. From its inception in 1868 to the present, its fundamental purposes have continued. Membership in the lodge grew and in 1894, the Elks bought the Robin son property at 125-27 Franklin a three-story stone building, which originally had been used as a storehouse. The building was formally occupied on Autg. 11, 1894. As the membership swelled, it was apparent, the Franklin Avenue quarters were no longer adequate. A site In the 400 block of North Washington Avenue, adjacent to the Scranton Club, which had been constructed in 1908, was purchased for $34,000.

The site was known as the Blair property. On June 10, 1913, the plans for the structure, prepared by architect John T. How ley were adopted: the cornerstone was laid on Thanksgiving Day, 1914; it was occupied in 1915. The Franklin Avenue lodge home was sold for $25,000. The 11,500 members who have been identified with Scranton Elks since its have been a cross-section of the areas population.

They have maintained the organizations oolicy of charity down through the years. Of the many activities of the club, none receives more solid support than its top projects, which hold priority in the heart of eaoVmember. They are the annual Chit'sitmas-time clothing of youngsters, a rac-tic that has continued for 60 years, and which represents a voluntary contribution of its members in excess of $12,000 per year, and the sponsorship of the Cerebral Palsy program which the members provide $5,000 per year.
