MODERN WOMEN Give a Sick Person a Good Mystery Thriller and Hes Happy, Mrs. Martin Finds By MARIAN MATS MARTIN OUR house Is a shelf of mystery stories and from this 1 particular shelf most of the lending is done. Only this morn-ng a friend dashed up in her roadster and clamored for thrillers for a man who got kicked in the shins by a horse ind was invalided indefinitely and thirsting, apparently, for blood. She departed with an armfuH of Beauty Tips By ELEANOB GUNN New York Did you ever think ef putting the whole family in clothes as alike as peas in a pod except, of course, for some necessary differences in size and detail? Perhaps not, but someone else did and the idea has spread like wild fire. First we had brother and sistei suits.

They were a success. Then we had mother and daughtei clothes. They, too, went over. Soon after we had husband and wife oi Mr. and Mrs.

Suits and now, Id have you know, the sports sections to shops are quite wild about identical clothes for the whole family. Its an idea. This is not the first season in phich women have gone in for mens shirts and have copied everything men wear when it was not feasible to raid a mans wardrobe. Any honest haberdasher will tell rou that the women who frequent nis shop are not always shopping tor the men folks. Active sports clothes are bound to be on the masculine order.

They must be cut for action and are imartest when man-tailored. But what are these "kin slothes? Well lets see. There are midshipman shirts, right off the backs of British sailors; there are Monte Carlo raw silk shirts with bold checks there are Terry cloth oreefers for the beach, not to mention flannel blazers, sweatshirts, linen-front golf sweaters, bush shirts, poplin sailing suits, peasant weave linen shorts and slacks, fly front gabardine shorts, espadrilles, golf and tennis shoes, 'and crepe caps are all quoted identical. Give your lips a gentle massage with suntan oil before you have your daily sunbath and at other times use pomade or camphor ice to prevent drying out and chapping. DO NOT get into a rut where your cosmetics are concerned.

Have at least two favorite shades of nail polish to wear with different costumes. Have at least two light summery fragrances and a more exotic perfume for different costumes and different moods. Miss Gloria Baker and Mr. Ted Bassett are caught by the camera as they sup at the Waldorf-Astoria. Miss Baker, who lead the younger generation of society girls in chic, wears a sophisticated gown of clinging black French taffeta cut in a low oval neck, front and back, and decorated with a huge crimson silk rose.

ON YOUR RADIO thrillers and a refusal to take anything else. Are you sure he likes detective tories? I wanted to know. Dont be silly! Who doesnt? And who doesnt? I used to think that I didnt and 1 (till admit to being terribly bored by the lameness of the formulas ised. I always mess the murderer. not that wantto boast, but its so easy.

All one has to do is pick out the character least under suspicion and theres your villain! Voltaire once said that the sound of history was the tread of sabots going upstairs and the patter of satin slippers coming down. This Statement suggests intrigue and spies. Spy Stories Thrilling I am no advocate of escape Iterature, but there is something Ibout a secret service or spy story lhat is fine. I love movies and plays concerning espionage, too, when they find the plans to le fortifications in the beautiful dancers gold tooth I jump out of ny seat. I can remember when the num-Oer of troops leaving for a given point at a given time were carried In a fountain pen, but after a time there were too many fountain pens In too many novels and consequently the plot engineers had to dig up something new.

Just now the world is full of gpies, many of them beautiful, all jf them mysterious. One of the best spy plots of all time was a snatch of real life. Two hawkeyes working for the same government during the World War wore the same type hat. They would meet In a restaurant and when departing pick up the wrong hat. Just as simple as that.

I am anticipating the next war solely for the purpose of enjoying new crop of spy stories. My heart is all wrapped up in ladies and gentlemen who wend their way in and out of cafes wearing beautiful clothes and flashing signals across the table. For romance it beats bands across the table or anything one might suggest. Hie great trouble wtih fiction of the romantic school is that it so definitely does not hold the mirror up to nature. It, too, is written after a familiar formula, familiar, that is, because of other stories not real happenings.

When one really gets hold of a book that is really a cross section of life it has interest, but these tiake-believe stones for grown-ups leave anyone who knows how nuch stranger life is than fiction, pretty flat. Which is undoubtedly she answer to the great success of (he mystery 6tory and explains why men are such avid readers of em. (Paid Advertisement) INDIGESTION! LEGAL NOTICE NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS Notice Is hereby given that the Board of Trustees of the Alisal Union Elementary School District, of Monterey County will receive bids for furnishing all labor, material, transportation and services for the construction of a four class room and teachers' room addition to the present Alisal Union Elementary School Building, located in Monterey County, California; each bid to be in accordance with plans and specifications prepared by C.

J. Ryland. Architect, 136 Bonefacio Place. Monterey, California, and now on file with the County Superintendent of Schools, Monterey County, Court House, Salinas, Califorma. Upon deposit of TEN DOLLARS ($10 00) plans and specifications may be obtained from the office of ths architect, C.

J. Ryland, 136 Bonefacle Place, Monterey, California. Bidders are hereby notified that pursuant to the Statutes of the Stats of California, or local law thereto applicable, the Board of Trustees of the Alisal Union Elementary School District of Monterey County, has ascertained the general prevailing rats of per diem wages and rates for legal holiday and overtime work in the locality in which this work Is to be performed, for various major crafts or types of workmen or mechanic needed to execute the contract. The prevailing rates so determined are as follows; Trade or Min Rate Min Wage Occupation per 8 hour Scale for By JACQUELINE HUNT CUMMER is usually kind to bru- nettes. But dont let this make you careless when you woo the sun! Even though you can stand more sun at the beginning than fair-skinned girls, take your tanning gradually.

The gradually acquired tan is usually much more even and rich in tone. Avoid that first bum that so often means peeling and ugly red splotches that last for weeks. Keep your skin supple and clear by supplying it with plenty of fine oils to preserve the moisture. Just as soon as your skin has reached the shade of brown that is most becoming to you, begin applying a sun lotion or a protective cream that will check the tanning You will not have to worry so much about hats, but occasionally spray a little protective oil on your hair to keep it from bleaching slightly in the sun and to keep the ends from drying out too much in the wind. Change youi cosmetics if you havent already done so.

You will need a soft-er shade of rouge, one that tends more to the orange-reds. And you will need a lipstick that is a brownish-red like carnelian, terra cotta or russet. The shade of your face powder will depend on how light or how deep you prefer your tan. If you will take on a deep tan before summer Is up, get a powder that Is quite dark and start blending it with the powder you are now using, increasing the proportion of suntan powder as your skin takes on a deeper shade. Use a small empty box that can be tightly closed and shake the powder vigorously to blend the two colors evenly.

Avoid mascara or eye shadow for daytime use, but try a tiny dab of blue or green shadow when you dress for evening. Blue is lovely for either blue-eyed or brown-eyed girls, while green mascara is loveliest for brunettes or for gray-eyed girls with dark hair and naturally dark lashes. (Paid Advertisement) Santa Barbara Woman Suffers 10 Years Now Relieved of Sluggish Kidney Pains I am glad to tell what S.L.K. Formula haa done for me," states Mrs. E. Schmid, 224 East Pedre-gosa Street, Santa Barbara, Calif. Read this letter.

This is one of the many hundreds of California testimonials which praises the merits of this new surgeons prescription. I am glad to tell everyone my experience with Williams S. L. K. Formula.

I have suffered 10 years and for the past 4 years I have been under a doctors care. I was nervous and run-down and I was hardly able to keep on my feet My rest at night was broken and it was necessary to get up 7 and 8 times a night because of night rising. My system was all clogged up due to constipation. I was tired, listless. I had a worn-out feeling.

Heard About Marvelous Results "I heard about the marvelous results S.L.K. was giving others who suffered as I did. I decided to try it. After taking the first bottle I commenced to feel relieved. I could sleep better.

I lost some of that tiredness. I could eat without fear of that awful suffering caused from gas. After I had taken 2 bottles my appetite was returning to normal, my constipation was greatly relieved and my kidney action more normal. I have confidence in S.L.K. and I want to tell my friends who suffer about it.

No Secret to S. L. K. There are no secrets to Williams S.L.K. Formula.

It is merely a doctors prescription. The ingredients in this prescription are plainly printed on the label. S.L.K. acts at once to relieve suffering and pain in stomach, liver, kidneys and bowels by removing poisonous accumulations. If you are suffering from sour acid stomach, bowels clogged with poisonous impurities, painful gas, loss of appetite, awful biliousness, sick headaches, sleeplessness from frequent night rising due to sluggish kidneys you owe it to yourself to try this New Doctors prescription.
