Staley, a native of North Wilkesboro who had lived near Burlington for the past three years, sustained fatal injuries in a race at the State Fairgrounds in Richmond, Va. yesterday. It was the second fatal stock car accident in Virginia within the past year. Herman Boiling Clary, 22 year old Virginia, died last August after he was hit by a heavy metal gate in a track pit at Lawrenceville, Va.

Staley, who is survived by his wife and four children, was 30 years old. He had been racing for seven years. Hubert Westmoreland of Burlington owned and serviced his racing cars for some three years. The Chevrolet Staley was driving yesterday fans saw them off 10 days ago. They were pelted with derisive lowballs by their classmates.

But the basketball team of Xavier University found things a LOUISVILLE, Ky. The team even had a chance to heave a few snowballs symbolic ones of paper back at their classmates. Even Coach Jim McCafferty, the only one who believed his team could go anywhere at the tournament, said dazedly, "I'm afraid I'll wake up and find out it's all been a dream." Xavier had left for the tournament with a lackluster 15 11 record. It ran through four upsets, winning the championship Saturday with a 78 74 overtime Victory over Dayton. The' accident in which Staley died was one of attle 34 72 for his fourth national championship Saturday night, he took special care to praise the NCAA. "They've treated me and Kentucky very well," He said.

He did, however, vow back in 1952 to bring his Wildcats back to the top of the nation's basketball powers before calling it a career.
