shopping day because women read only the Sunday papers and stores naturally concentrated their advertising in the Sunday papers. As a re suit of offering all the 'special Walter Hammitt values' on Monday, merchandise frequently did not last out the week. As time went on, however, the dailies became more important as advertising media and shoppers spread their visits to the stores over the other days of the week, and in recent years we have seen shopping hours extended into the evening as well." Cites Co-operation He noted that the close relationship between the news- papers and the stores that exists today was lacking in the early days. Through the contributions of newspapers, wiser merchants and Better Business Bureaus, advertising has become more believable, more interesting and more profitable for the dol lar spent, he said. The former textile manufacturer bludgeoned his wife, Paula, to death in the hotel St. George on Dec.

30, 1943, with shoe. He was convicted of that crime in 1944, and the following month was adjudged insane. Adjudged last March to have recovered, he was sentenced to be electrocuted. But his sentence was set aside and he was granted a new trial on Oct. 16.

Assistant District Attorney William I. Siegel, asking the psychiatric examination, said he would like to be certain before the new trial is begun that Wolfe is still sane. The latter, appearing with counsel, discussed in detail with the court certain matters related to his defense, which is to be based on the contention that while sane now, he was insane at the time of the crime and until his motion for a new trial was granted. Wolfe was concise, incisive and entirely logical in his re marks. During his prior court appearances his speech was ir when he tried to impersonate a blind man for purposes of beg ging.
