American Elm Planted at Rockefeller Center The first of eight new 50-foot American elm trees was planted Wednesday along the 5th Ave. frontage of Rockefeller Center. The planting will continue to 48th St. The new trees will replace eight English which ere ated widespread public interesting when planted in 1939. Prior to that time trees of such size had never been planted on New York streets and their chance of survival, even through the first was a moot question.

Three of the original trees have survived. The decision by Rockefeller Center, to proceed with the replanting program was largely influenced by many favorable comments from the public and its belief that the trees contribute sufficiently toward the beautification of 5th Ave. to warrant continuation of the project.
