Yet, each year my mother-in- law sends us Christmas cards. Further, she sends my wife and me money as gifts, and we are not nancially strapped. I truly appreciate her always remembering our birthdays and thinking of us during the holidays.

However, part of me feels like her sending Christmas cards is not acknowledging part of our family identity. And, sending money makes me feel as though she (a) has no idea what to get us, (b) thinks we need money, (c) has put little thought and effort into this. Part of me feels like I am being petty for even complaining, when I realize she is involved in our lives and remembering to send something. Part of me feels as though I should be insulted on both counts. What is your take? Mixed emotions My take will be however much of your unwanted cash like to unload.

I realize monetary gifts can send a loaded message: think or just think at But given the perennial rage prompted by knickknack gifts to minimalists, fussy gifts to modernists, frumpy gifts to fashionistas, fattening gifts to dieters, crassly commercial gifts to PBS-ists, and so on and given the stunning, practical ease in depositing this cash into a college savings account for Junior, accompanied by a thank-you note to Grandma stating as much I think this loaded message is best ignored in favor of bigger things. One of those bigger things being, the Christmas cards to a Jewish household. That does suggest cluelessness at best, and at worst an anti-Semitic swipe (a big stretch). Still, someone with whom you have a good deserves every of any doubt. Certainly your wife can ask her mom, without anger, there any reason you send us Christmas cards, knowing we celebrate Certainly, too, though, you can presume an explanation that will put the issue to rest in your mind.

Such as: Your mother-in-law always does a Christmas card mailing every year, and had any Jewish families in her close orbit before, and she going to do, cross her own daughter off the annual list? Granted, she should switch to something nondenominational haters be damned), or just send you a separate card. But people who mean offense often even dream of the ways they might give it. He passed away after 88 years of robust, independent living on March 14, 2010. Howard's family moved to Piceance Creek when he was a young child. There they became sheep ranchers, which provided a wonderful, adventurous environment for a young boy to grow up in. Howard learned at a young age how to be a true shepherd not just a sheepherder. Later as a father, he was a good shepherd to his children and family as well as to his sheep.

Howard loved his family. Howard married (Clarice) Jane Raley on December 11, 1941, jus days after Pearl Harbor. They fought hard and loved harder; each being the love of each others life. One cannot think one without the other, hence our happiness for this time of happy reunion for them both. Their marriage was later sealed for time and eternity in the Provo, Utah temple of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; his parents, Joseph and Zola Robinson; older brother, Robb Robinson and sister, Beatrice Shideler. He is survived by his dear cousin, Fletcher Bleak who grew up in the Robinson home. Howard and Jane had five children, all living, Susan (Harold) McBee, Barbara (Dwight) Cook, Larry (Susan Anthony), Elaine (George) Lee, and Samuel (Cheri Wyness). Howard had one deceased grandchild, and 27 living grandchildren. He also considered his nieces and nephews as part of his immediate family.

He was the "fun" grandpa and "Unk" always willing to play a game of some kind, go sledding, skiing, fishing, picnicking, boating, or to a "picture often hauling a pickup full of kids to a good western movie at the outdoor movie theater near Rifle. Howard believed in working hard and playing hard. He always liked to let us think he was the "naughty" one, but we knew it was never really true. He was an expert fisherman, and hunter. He taugh his family by precept and example to love the outdoors and beauties of nature.

He loved his country and the freedoms it offered. He became increasingly concerned that those freedoms were gradually being eroded away with more and more government controls and regulations. Howard was and will always be dearly loved. He will be missed, but his family has faith that he's in a happy, peaceful place with loved ones who have gone on before and many new adventures to look forward to. Viewing at 9:00 a.m.
