Ex-Moab cop pleads guilty to theft from department By PAUL SHOCKLEY Paul.Shockley@gjsentinel.com A former Moab police cer faces a maximum one year in jail after pleading guilty Tuesday to misdemeanor theft of cash from his own department, according to the Seventh Judicial District clerk in Moab.

Edward Guerrero, 43, pleaded guilty to theft as a class A misdemeanor, while prosecutors Tuesday agreed to dismiss a charge of felony third-degree burglary as part of a plea agreement. Guerrero will be sentenced June 22 in Moab by Seventh Judicial District Judge Lyle Anderson. The Salt Lake City Tribune quoted attorney in reporting that the $900 in stolen cash, which was removed from two envelopes, had been intended as drug-buy money. Bill Ritter vetoed a bill Friday regulating the sex offender management board, saying the legislation went too far by allowing convicts to choose their own treatment programs. Ritter said the bill did not have an adequate hearing before it was adopted and would weaken the program. The governor said lawmakers will have plenty of time next year to the problem before the program is automatically shut down by law.

Road bike collides with coyote on trail ASPEN An Aspen Highlands ski patroller broke a leg after colliding with a coyote on a bike trail. Fifty-six-year-old Bob Sloezen said he was riding a road bike on the trail Monday when the coyote darted into his path. The animal dashed off. Sloezen said he suffered a spiral fracture to the femur of his left leg. A titanium rod was inserted into his leg and connected to another rod in his hip.

State Trooper Heather Cobler said the car was damaged by the slide Friday afternoon, but no one was injured.
